The M156 AMG engines do not have problems with the "balance shaft" failure, but they do have other issues with head bolts deteriorating and valve lifters failing. My understanding is that they are all problematic before about MY2011.

That's a MY2006. All MY2006's are in range for possible balance shaft failure.

Apparently, the failure rate is not very high, or at least the range of miles where it fails is very broad. There are not many reports of failure in the forums, and not enough for it to show as a blip on the "consumer review" sites.

Plug in the VIN and get the data card. Look for the "Engine" line and heck the last 8 digits. If it's below 30 088611 for the V8 or 30 468993 for the V6, then it's in the range.

Those are all MY2006's with M272 engines, so yes, all will be in the range for potential balance shaft failure. Only MY2007 needs to be checked as it was resolved halfway through that build cycle. MY2008+ are all good.

30-503110 is well out of the problem range. It ended with 30-468993.

That is wrong - it is in the affected range since it is below 30-088611.

Thanks for the correction. Not sure how I feel about the trade at this point with that issue.

Personally, I'd pass on it. My theory is that they will all fail, it's just a matter of when. Some failed under warranty, or like mine, just outside of warranty and MBUSA took care of them. Others have failed at well over 100K miles, and anywhere in between. Regardless, it's a coin toss and an expensive one - $4K++.
