Diagnostic Trouble Error Code P2442
My wife came home today said the check engine light was on, hooked it up to me reader 2 codes where showing the 1st was P2442 and the 2nd it said was pendind what ever that means. Looking it up I came up with Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve Stuck Open. I have been getting a strange smell from somthing from time to time if that means anything, though maybe the cats where going out.
Is there a DIY on this or is this something I need to bring the car in..

That error is DTC 0821: "The secondary air valve (cylinder bank 2) is jammed open." Bank 2 is the left (US drivers side) of the engine. The valves are under the front engine cover, right behind the air pump. I assume the bank 2 valve would be on the left side of the engine (on your right, standing in front of the engine looking at the air pump).

No, look at the air pump. Standing in front of the engine, you'll see one large hose exiting the pump on the top right, and another on the bottom left. Follow those, and you'll find on each hose a silver "mushroom" valve. The left side valve (to your right when standing in front of the engine) is right behind the oil filter. The right side valve is below and to your left of the air pump. Sorry, I'm too lazy tonight to take a photo, but I found this one. This is an M272, but it's the same on the M273. The air pump is in the red circle, and you'll see the valve:

Yep, but before you buy one, maybe you should check it out and see if a vacuum hose or electrical connector is loose. Or, take it off and see if it has some trash in it. The air pump intake comes "downstream" of the air filters, but it could still have trash in it if the intake hose was ever disconnected (it's easy to forget to reconnect it when removing the top engine cover).

Thanks Rodney all fixed. I sprayed WD40 in it bunch of black carbon build up came out. I then soaked it in alcohol all night blew it out with some air in the morning let it sit all day. Installed it when I got home from work all seems good no check engine light no codes, will take it for a good drive tomorrow.
This was a very DUI easy removal and install only one part needs to be removed to get to the valve.Took me 30 min to get it apart and about 5 min to put it back togther and another 20min to get all the freaking tools I dropped down on the car pan at the bottom. I was lucky to not have to replace the part.
OT a tad got a call from my SA he is a family friend said that here was a recall on the camshaft solenoid magnets, you mentioned to me in a PM. Well anyways he said bring it in and they will replace it. Thanks again for you help..

Well I am pretty sure they would want to replace the part at 210.00 then 2 hours of labor so my guess would be high 300.00 to low 400.00 range.

Hey this code just came up on my 2011 w204 c300 luxury . I replaced the thermostat a few weeks ago & it turned out fine but a few days ago a check engine light came on for a code P0410 Secondary Air Injection System & under it says P2442 : secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open bank 2 .
