2005 CLK500 Cabriolet Roof Malfunction

Hello all. This is my first time posting and I am no Mercedes expert so excuse if I don't call a component the right name. I have searched all day for a solution to my problem with no luck so here it is.

I was driving and hit a minor speed bump on my commute. This caused the computer to start flashing that my roof was in operation as if the convertible top was trying to open or close even though I was not pressing on the convertible up/down button. When I got the chance to park my car I let the top completely down then back up hoping to clear whatever the issue was. NO LUCK. On top of that my windows were now slightly down as if the roof was not completely in the up position. I had my mechanic reset the main computer module with the hopes I could get the windows back up but that didn't work. When I got home I inspected the car to find a "plastic spring clip" in the roof storage location had broken off and was the cause of the issue. The "spring clip" I refer to pushes on a small green button telling the car that the roof is completed the open/close movement.

As a temporary fix I jammed some electrical tape and paper to simulate the clip pressing the little green button but I want to get this fixed officially because I feel my temp fix may be unsafe.

What I want to know is what is the replacement part I need to fix my problem? Also, more importantly, can I replace/ repair the part myself or will a mechanic need to do it? (I am not a very mechanical person)

I have links to pictures of the broken part in question as well as my temp fix. Thanks

I am not 100% certain, but I believe this is called the "Soft top compartment cover in catch position limit switch" and is part number A2098201910 (both left and right are the same part). Parts.com has it for about $50: http://www.parts.com/parts/index.cfm...earch&siteid=2

According to WIS, the switch just clips into place, so it should be easy to remove and replace.

Thanks! I am going to take the part to the dealership to get a confirmation that is the correct part I need to order. Forgive me but what is "WIS" because the way that the part looked like it was connected to the rest of the car seemed that it would take more than just snapping into place. If WIS is a DIY manual could you provide a screenshot showing how to install the part?

lkaalem,

welcome to the forum, and congratulations on finding the culprit for your soft top malfunction! I recall a customer quoting about the same price from the dealership, and that it was a pretty simple swap. Go for it!

I think if you get the new part in hand it'll be fairly obvious how it fits.

WIS = Workstation Information System, which is MBZ's official shop manual. It's really good, but often lacks the detail on exactly how to remove parts when they just "snap" in place because it assumes familiarity with MBZ attachments. Here's the WIS instructions (look at part 84/22):

Great! Thanks for the info. After I order the piece and let you all know how the install goes. On another note, is there anyway I can get an electronic copy of the WIS manual?

WIS is only electronic. You can buy a bootleg copy on eBay, but I would recommend spending around $500 and getting the Chinese clone version of SDS (called C3 or the latest C4). It costs about $500, but you get a full version of the dealer's diagnostic system, and it comes with WIS. It only takes saving you from a few dealer visits to pay for itself.

All,

Thanks so much for you help. I ordered the part and installed it myself with a friends help in about 40 minutes. The hardest part was removing the expansion clips (about 6 of them) with a butter knife lol

Hmm. I will have to look into that. Thanks again for helping me with my fix.
