The new clk

I am not sure if this had been discussed before, but I was just checking out some pictures of the new CLK and started thinking about where Mercedes was trying to go with it.

What I’ve herd, even the W210 CLK was set on the old c-class wheelbase, yet the exterior and the interior were those of the E-class (go figure why they didn't just call it ELK or something).

Now looking at the W211 CLK, the rear resembles that of the W211 sedan taillights, while the front and the side resemble more of the new C-class look. Overall the exterior of the car looks to me like it should be a C-class coupe instead of the hatchback they make.

Overall I think that the old CLK had much more of a presence to it, and the new CLK though very nice looking just doesn't seem like a 60,000 dollar car.

These are just my $.02 and I was wondering what are your thoughts on this.

yea, i agree with that. The older one just looks nice while the new one looks too much like a c-class, which is also nice, but I'd like some uniqueness also in a car.

I couldn't agree with you more on the fact that the new CLK, W209, has too much of the body-styling of the C Class. It's a little different with this generation since the E and C class share similar tail-ends, but the front-ends on the two are totally different. At least if the W209 shared the same headlight design as the new E class then it would make it look more like that line up.

The one thing I do like on the new CLK is the gap between the front and rear windows, or the lack thereof. There basically is no longer that pillar between the two windows that gives me the worst blind spot of any car I've driven. I think they borrowed that styling from the CL. Other than that, I love the look of the W208's.

actually if you compare line by line, the w209 still looks more like the w211 sedan other than the headlight which is not seperated like the w211. however, it is not as appearant as the w208 resembles the w210 E-class.

btw, MB based the CLK on the C-class platform because it's more cost efficient. The last CE-coupe which was based on the E-class sedan was not very successful because it was very expensive to produce.

Re: The new clk

As to its styling, the current CLK looks too Volvo-ish from the rear with a touch of Toyota Camry thrown in for good measure. I think the front end of the previous CLK is extremely well designed, that of the current not so much so. But like many things in life, it's a matter of individual taste.

At least the folks getting new CLKs don't have to wait inordinate amounts of time to get them as buyers of the previous model did. Whether that's due to higher production numbers for the new model or a reflection of consumer demand, I'm not sure.

YEAa, that pillarless window looks soooo nice when you put the windows down.

The front end of the new CLK resembles that of the new SL. I've owned both 208's (430's)and a 209 (500)and the 209 drives better, has more power, has a nicer interior, more safety equipment, better torsinol and structural rigidity and more options. And IMHO the 209 has a nicer front and rear end design and with all the windows down the side profile is nicer too. The 208's doors do close with much more of the older MB's solid thunk though (I miss that) When I traded my 2001 208 I had the opportunity to buy a new 2003 208 cab or the 209, the 208 looked very nice but after driving the cars back to back it was the 209.

Maybe not with the new one, but it would make sence with the W208 CLK, since it looked so much like a W210 E-class.
