Basic Questions for 2004 CLK500
Hello Everyone-
Please don't yell or get mad at me on my questions.
I have bought 2004 CLK500 with AMG package, but not for daily driving.
Have few questions:
1- Trying to register on EPC website, am in the USA, tried different credit/debit cards, but still unable to do it, any input?
2- On a cold start in the morning, after 10-15min of driving, there is a burning rubber like smell, which disappear shortly, any input?( L Valve Cover gasket was replaced in 2012, while R was done in 2011 by the previous owner, I have the receipts for it)
3- When I press the windshield washer fluid button, wipers do work, but there is no fluid while reservoir is full too?
4- How to set/reset the memory settings for the seats?
5- What basic maintenance work I can do on the car? It has ~67k miles on it.
6- Should I use the headlights in Auto or manual, just asking if it will increase the life of ballast?
7- Oil was replaced in March 2012 with MB1, car has only been driven 4k miles, should I change it now since it's a year now or can drive for a month or so like that?
Thanks in advance for all the help and your responses

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure our CLK members will be helpful; this forum is less "STFF" than some others.
4. After adjusting seat and mirrors to your liking, press M and a number. That saves that setting to that number. Then you need only press and hold that number to return to those settings.
6. I always used auto so I never have to turn lights on or off, but I guess I burn bulbs faster. Haven't replaced a ballast yet though.

Thanks again for the help and response.

Any time you press "M" and a number you delete whatever used to be stored for that number. I dunno about Mobil 1 prices, cuz $120 for an oil change at the dealer is the one good deal they offer! I hope one of our more knowledgeable members will chime in, but be careful about touching the bulbs!

3. Probably the washer pump is not working.
5. If the previous owner did not do any transmission service, you should.
6. I always set it to Auto. Don't know why, every time my car goes for service in the dealership, they always set it to manual.
As per Eddieo45, price for oil change in the dealership is actually not bad considering the price for parts. Locally in Toronto, Mobile-1 0w40 costs around $100 for 8 liters in auto stores and $25 for MB oil filter.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and guidance.
Actually, my local dealer is charging $84-$95 for synthetic MB1 Oil change, which is a good deal, but I am not a fan of "Stealership"

So for $95 they provide the oil, filter and labor? That's not too bad. Even at $5/qt, and $12 for the filter, you're in for nearly $60 in parts, so to pay $35 for someone else to do the work while you sit in the customer lounge and enjoy a complimentary latte, well, that doesn't sound so bad.

On a CLK500, you have the 722.6 5-speed. It's service involves draining and removing the pan, replacing the filter, and refilling. Unfortunately, they deleted the catalytic converter drain on that transmission around MY2000, so you get less than half the fluid out. There is a more involved procedure to do a full fluid flush, but honestly, that may be overkill - the "partial" refill and new filter every 40K should be good enough.

For the drain, do I need any special tool? Can you please tell the part number for the filter? Again, any special tool or skills?
I will take your advice and will drain half the fluid.

Well when you're done with that do the torque converter too.
1. EPC took my visa, never had a problem with a card there for 3-4 years now.
2. I had a similar issue on my CLK55, it was the valve covers leaking a tiny bit of oil on the headers. It would smoke and smell like burning crayons for a few minutes after a cold start then clear up. Stuff some paper towels in there (when cold!) and see if there's a small leak somewhere.
4. Already covered, set your settings over the previous owner
5. I'm approaching 70K on mine. I've done:
Brake fluid, tranny, rear diff oil, engine air filters, cabin air filters, spark plugs, cam position sensor, steering fluid (expensive!)
6. Mine are on auto, and I did lose a HID balast under the driver side. Replaced from ebay for $140. Still on auto
7. 4k/1yr isn't much for synthetic. Should be fine.

I am planning to do tranny, rear diff, steering fluid and cabin air filter.
Would you guys suggest this one :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CLK-350-CLK-500-CL500-TRANSMISSION-FILTER-KIT-/260584629066?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cac0de34a&vxp=mtr
Or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140-277-00-95-AT-Filter-MERCEDES-C230-C240-C280-C32-AMG-C320-C350-C43-AMG-/310608017146?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4851ae36fa&vxp=mtr
Did you do rear diff, steering fluid and cabin air filter by yourself?
Thanks, my issue for EPC has been resolved and got an access today.

I went to an indie for the pan flush (partial flush) and I bought the parts from a MB dealership. I checked the invoice and here are the part no:
Filter : 140-277-00-95
Oil pan gasket: 140-271-00-80
Seal ring: 140-271-00-60
Do a search of a thread I started last year on this very topic. Name of the thread is 722.6 ATF. Against MB official advice, I am glad I did this service. I will definitely do it again in 40k miles
One important thing about transmission service is to keep everything clean.

Also, which transmission oil did you get?
Thanks again, your thread is really informative and helpful.

I live in Toronto and we pay more for everything here. I did my first pan flush in the dealership and I was charged $310 CAN (after 15% discount because my buddy works there). This was 3 years ago and they used the original ATF 722.6.
An indie did the 2nd pan flush for me and I paid $200 in Feb, 2012. This time I had to use 722.9 because 722.6 was no longer available. Again, please refer to my 722.6 ATF thread in this forum. At the time, i had to make a decision to go with the new ATF.
I, for one, prefer to use MB branded parts. Labour cost is expensive so I want to be sure the parts are correct and reliable. Even if the maintenance is done by an indie, I still buy the parts from the dealership. Another reason is many online stores do not ship to Canada.

I am planning to get Shell or Fuchs Titan, for the fluid.
Still have to do some research on the parts, since MB is not my daily driver.
Will consult you guys, as soon as I have figured out the parts.

For ATF, make sure it is in MB approved list. I believe Mr. Rudeney provided the list in my thread.
You can get part numbers for different components of your car in autohausaz.com. To confirm the part numbers, call your local dealerships. All they need is the year and model. They usually do not give out part numbers but they will confirm for you if you ask for parts availability.

I firmly believe that your catalytic converters should be drained daily. The good news is that this can be done from the driver's seat. Just find a suitable road and press the big rectangular button under your right foot as hard you can.

I am lost again, some are saying:
1- I need transmission service in which Fluid/Filter will be replaced by dropping the pan.
2- While some are saying they will just flush the fluid and pour the new fluid, will not change the filter.
Checked for the parts with the MB dealer, he quoted me $70 for the gasket, filter and '6' screws.
Is it expensive, reasonable or should I still look around?
Thanks again guys for helping me out and all of your guidance and advice
Lets drive the lovely MB

See the excerpt from one of the shops response:
Also with 68,000 miles you may not have to do the transmission service yet. Mercedes considers the fluid to be "lifetime". We can check the condition but it's fairly expensive to service the transmission due to the cost of the fluid.

I am doing more and more research and getting lost for the transmission fluid change.
People say, TCU/Adaptation needs to be updated after the tranny fluid change, also ECU need to be updated with the latest software, while all these things only dealers can do, not an Indy and nor yourself.
I thought, it would be a simple, drain and re-fill with the required ATF fluid.
Do I need any special tools or any equipment? I have worked and replaced fluids on Japanese cars, but I know it's a MB, so don't wanna ruin it
Need advice and help from the experts
