Engine Oil

Just talked to 2 local Toronto MB dealerships, they have been using Mobile One 5w40 for oil changes for a while. They use 0w40 only for AMG models.
I always thought they use 0w40 for all MB. Are you guys aware of this?

I would think 0w40 is better oil than 5w40 since it flows with less resistance when the engine is cold started.

0W-40 is more expensive to formulate. Insist on 0W-40 for Canadian conditions. It is for all Benz.

Looks like the dealerships here are cutting corners.

I noticed some Mobile One 0w40 do not say European Formula on the bottle. Are there different kinds out there?

BTW, anything know where I can get 0w40 cheaper on Toronto? Canadian Tire and the dealerships here charge $12-13 per liter.

Not sure how many different kinds of 0W-40 there are, or whether they all say European Formula on the label or not, but all you need to pay attention to is the specs in the fine print on the back. Only use oil that meet MB's spec. The label will list the specs it meets, and one should be MB 229.5 - you can double check me in the oil sticky above that I got the number right, but without looking I'm pretty sure that's it.

EDIT: Since I now see the sticky has 229.5 in the title, I'd say I got the number right.

Yep, you can use any oil that meets MB spec 229.5, but 0w40 seems to be the best viscosity of that for the widest possible range of climates. I suppose if you lived in a very warm climate that rarely saw temperatures lower than 50F, then 5w40 would be fine and save you a few dollars. I have always used Mobil 1 0w40 in all of my modern MBZ engines.

I to use only Mobil1 0-40W. I had the oil changed at the dealer (3 years ago) and they used 5-40W. I only knew because I got a check oil level lite a couple weeks later and reviewed the receipt mainly looking for the amount of oil used in the change. I asked them about the use of 5-40W and he told me it was approved for use here in the south. I blasted him; 1. about using something different than what is in the manual w/o informing me and 2. because I live in the south does not mean that I am always here in "sunny land". Asked him if he thought I should check with him before going someplace cold in my car.

I change the oil myself these days. When I've had it changed since the incident with the dealer, I've provided Mobil1 0-40W and watched the independent service tech pour it in. Yes! I'm a butt-head......

This may not help my Canadian friends, but between the local auto parts stores here - O'Reilly, Auto Zone and Advance Auto, I usually pay under $6/qt for Mobil 1 0W40. And if I'm really desperate and no one has it on sale, I know I can get it at WalMart for under $7/qt. And they just started carrying the 5qt just for under $25, so next time, I'll be going that route.

Went to Costco and Walmart and they did not carry Mobile 1. Then went to Parts Source, $11.99 per liter, same as MB dealerships.

All the Walmart stores in my area have it in quart bottle for just under $7. Sometimes I have to ask in the auto service center for them to get it for me. According to Walmart.com, they do carry the 5qt jug at my store. And if not, I could just have it shipped.

Walmart US and Walmart Canada carry different merchandises and different pricings.
I just checked Walmart.ca and they don't have 0-w40. They do have 5w30 but it costs over $11 per liter, about the same price as the dealerships.

See for yourself that we pay outrageous prices in Canada, especially now that US and Canadian dollars are almost on par.
