Question for a friend
His ignition key would not turn and his indie asked for $1,200 for the repair. I checked Autohausaz and the ignition switch was $35. So, I am definitely looking at the wrong thing.
Let's say for our w209, if the ignition key would not turn, what should I be looking for?
If it's the SmartKey system, then it's more complicated. First, does he have a spare and does it work? if there is no spare, my advice is to order one from the dealer's parts counter. If he has more than one key and none of them work, then it's a problem with the keys not being recognized (even though they may unlock the doors, the ignition switch recognition is totally separate). In this case, it could be a vehicle battery problem. That's by far the most common cause of this. f that's not it, then it could be a bad ignition switch, and unfortunately that often "fries" the keys. Unless the indy has access to SDS, that would be a dealer repair.

As for the lock barrel, I found these 2 items in a Canadian online store:
Ignition Lock Housing:

2.2L_L4/allB/Ignition/Primary_Ignition/Ignition_Lock_Housing/pagenum1/tabS
Ignition Lock Cylinder:

I will call my dealership tomorrow to get a quote of the lock barrel.
Approximately how much time does it take to replace this lock barrel? Is $1,200 a fair price for he job? I think the indie would have to get the parts from the dealership.

Lock barrel: $229CAN. Comes with one key. I think they call this the lock tumbler.
Steering lock: $180 CAN. According to the parts diagram, this is the part right after the lock barrel.
The parts guy said I may need both parts.
I then went to Parts.com, the lock barrel (cyl and keys) is $43US and the steering lock is $105US. I am wondering, how can someone gets a MB key from a store other than the dealership?
Now that the key would not turn, how would I remove lock barrel and the steering column?

Glad you/your friend are on the path to ignition recovery.
To think of it, maybe they will make a same original key.
