W209 CupHolder DIY? Anyone?

I've been putting off changing my broken dash cupholder on my W209 for about 9 mo's now..... it just stares at me half way out...... saying GL sucker changing me out!

I dug into it today with no luck. I pulled the radio, CD player..... but could not get the glove box out.... or the center console out. Looks like a major PITA to do it... so I just buttoned it back up.

A couple questions:

1. has anyone actually performed this themselves?...... any tips would be apprec.

2. has anyone had this done at the dealer? any est on hours/cost to do this...... if it's just a couple hours of labor.... I might just go the easy route.

Pretty bad design..... you should be able to pry back a couple clips to slide it out..... NOT remove the entire damn dash!.... ha....

You must remove the padded dash panel below the cupholder to get it out. And to do that, you must first remove the glove box and the entire center console. It is a major PITA. I know someone in the forum (if not here, then benzworld) did a retrofit and replaced his new "coin cubby" with the old style cupholder (like yours). It was a very involved process.

Sounds about right. It does take some time but it's not that much of a pain in the ***. Maybe I took it apart enough times to not care about it anymore

Word of caution: do not disconnect the cables from the gear selector plate too many times if you don't want to add soldering to your list. The connector that lights up the gear selector is pretty flimsy and can come disconnected from the circuit board pretty easily....Easy to fix but still annoying.

I'm going to put aside a future Saturday, when there is some cool weather.... and I'll throw some kenny g on the cd player..... and try to wooo sah my way through this. Such a stupid design...... you should be able to pinch two tabs and slip it out the front of the dash,.... not 4 hours of R&R for a cupholder..... AHH.
