Thanks for relieving me, yeah it's a very very light coating/leak and nothing too bad, I guess?

BTW, I took your advice of replacing transmission fluid and am so glad I did it. Old fluid was brown/black in color wasn't looking like ATF.

Could you please look at the quantity of ATF and engine oil in my previous post? Would really appreciate your input, please!

Thanks again

Yep either rear main seal or small possibility it could be from the electrohydraulic bush if it is coming from where the wire loom goes into the transmission, not sure if you replaced this during the service.

Rear main seal required the transmission to be removed and then the seal is accessible at the rear of the engine. Most people won't bother unless it is bad or they are doing other work like rebuilding the transmission.

I did not replace any connector or loom, but I think you guys are right it's definitely rear main seal and because it's small, I am not worried about it.

Car has ~73.3k miles, should I replace differential fluid? If so, has anyone done it here? Any helpful link would be greatly appreciated.

I'll leave up to the more senior experts and their experiences to say whether differential fluid should be changed or not as I am wondering that myself too.

But in case yes, the fluid needed is Hypoid Gear Oil 75W85 001989330312 as per MB Spec Sheet 235.7 and you need 1.5 US qt (1.4 L).

Yes definitely change it every once in a while. They are supposedly filled for life but every 60,000km is a better idea. There is a thread on how to do it otherwise I recommend getting WIS. You will probably need a fluid pump to refill it.

Spec 235.7 does not list Mobil 1 75W85. You can find the approved ones here:

Thanks xserver, what I meant to say was Mobil 75W85, as its listed here:

Mobilube FE 75W-85 Exxon Mobil Corporation, FAIRFAX, Virginia/USA
Mobilube FE Plus NG 75W-85 Exxon Mobil Corporation, FAIRFAX, Virginia/USA

Now real question, where can i get it? Dealer is selling it for $50/quart.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Faran - I replied to your PM, but for the benefit of others, I'll repeat it here: To properly check the level of the transmission fluid, you need to check the temperature. I'd use an infrared thermometer aimed at the transmission pan, then check the level against the dip stick marks at that temperature.

Mercedes 2006 CLK 500
Great thread, I was hoping for some insight. 2005 CLK 500 150K miles, the tranny doesnt hold much anymore on hills, should I do a trans flush? Drain and fill? Or am I dead in the water? (tranny still shifts smooth when driving).

You should try a full flush but your transmission might be toast.

Guys, I am planning to do differential fluid too. First, where can I get the fluid cheap? Definitely not at STEALERSHIP.

Second, any DIY link with picts or video would be greatly appreciated.

P.S: Is amazon the best(cheap) place for buying air filters?

Can take a look at our parts catalog here for parts that you're needing for your DIY job as well.

Our gear oil is sometimes hard to find in our catalog. I apologize for that. Here is Red Line Gear Oil.

It's an aftermarket/performance fluid. A good way to figure out the proper weight fluid for your differential would be to check your owners manual or you can reference the Red Line website here. Red Line makes great products, but it is not the OEM fluid that is used from factory.

edit: This looks like what the owners manual calls for 1035-INT Gear Oil, SAE 85W-90, Hypoid Gear Oil, GL-5 Spec, 1 Liter, Brand: Liqui Moly. The Red Line 75w-90 should still work fine. I run Red Line in my differential and they make great products.

So which one is better? Redline or Mobil 1 synthetic differential fluid

I, personally, prefer Red Line over Mobil 1 products as I have used both.

Unfortunately I cannot find the one I was thinking of when I wrote that but there are plenty and the basic layout is similar or identical between models. You will need a hand pump and if you are anything like me then you will also need lots of newspaper as you might make a mess.

Thanks tw2. I actually have seen most of these threads(looked it up earlier).

Was thinking, maybe you are aware of CLK500 specific DIY? Because it would help to locate hex bolts easily

Guess, I am going to get Redline and tackle it sooner than later. Prolly going to use Teflon tape on the threads too.

Please post if anyone is aware of a CLK500 specific Video or a thread?

P.S: Does anyone know torque specs for it? Is it 50 NM/37 lb-ft?

Bringing this thread back, I have few questions:

1- I replaced ATF and filter around 3-4k miles ago(at ~72k), should I replace just the fluid again? or wait till 90 or 100k? There's no shifting problem so far.

2- Does anyone has a recommendation for differential fluid or any DIY specific to CLK500? It has never been changed and am planning to do that too.

3- Has anyone used these 'Green' Air filters and should I clean MAF too? No light/warning or anything : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Eng...RV8i4p&vxp=mtr

4- Does anyone know the part number for cabin air filter/present on top of the battery?

Looking forward to your input and advice.

Thanks.

On 722.6 transmission, ATF change interval with the filter is 60,000 km.

When I replaced the one on my car, I used this: Mercedes 1 Liter Differential Oil (Hypoid Oil) SAE 75W-85 NEW 001 989 17 03 10

I bought it from eBay for $38
.

Get these OEM instead: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CB94PY/...I1BUUM3NI12SQC
