Trunk Spring

I went to open my trunk the other day. I heard a click but the truck would not go up. Apparently, the left spring of the trunk lid snapped. I called MB and they have to order it from Germany and it will take 7-10 days.

I can lift the truck lid but it won't stay up. I forgot later that day and the truck slammed down heavily. I drove afterward and I had a malfunction of the brake light which I replaced afterward. I have to be careful every time I open my truck now.

How do I replace this spring?

I remember adjusting the spring on my C240 as it got weak and would not fully raise the lid when unlocked. IIRC, it just hooks in place.

The spring of the right side broke 2 years ago. My local MB dealership had the spring in stock last time and the service advisor replaced it for me last time. I gave him my key and went to get a coffee, he returned within minutes and it was replaced.

I will look in the trunk to see how to replace the lining.

The lining is easy - just the typical snap-in plastic "rivets" used in auto trim. The center pin protrudes through the plastic retainer and expands it so its locked in place. You just need to remove the center pin to relive pressure. Some of the center pins have a screwdriver slots, others have caps that you pry up on. If it's a tiny pin, then push it in to release.

I will look at the truck lining. I am always concerned to pry open any panel without knowing the locations of the clips. Bad experience before and I broke the clips.

Wait. Are both ends of the spring goes under the lining? Should one side go to the truck lid?

You'll need to remove the lining to see it, since the trunk lid lift arm is behind that.
