Sensor trouble maybe?
I have a 05 Clk 500. The car starts up fine takes off fine but I've been noticing when I come to a stop it acts like it wants to die. Sometimes it's kind of delayed to take off. I throw it in neutral and it's perfectly fine. I just had to replace my battery which I bought only 2 years ago. What could it be? There aren't any check engine lights on.
Side track from things where can I get a decent priced radiator? The one I order online had a hole in it.

Check that the plastic engine cover (which doubles as the air filter housing) is secured. If it is not seated properly on the MAF sensor opening, it can cause this symptom. You can use your fingers under the back edge to check for a gap there.

You know when I got my car battery switched when I was on the road a couple of winters ago they never put the plastic piece back on top of my engine. I didn't know that it served as another filter or I would have gotten it back. Do you think if I ordered a replacement that might help?

I how we aren't talking about the same plastic piece.. Thats the only filter for your engine. Replacing the battery involves removing the AC filter(also a black plastic piece). exactly which plastic piece are you talking about?

I'd have to look at a 500 filter housing, but on my car there are three pieces to the engine cover. Two are just for looks - they just help cover the engine. The main one is the big box the air filters are in. At least on my car you do not need to remove them to change the battery. I just need to remove the box that the air filter for inside the car sits in, not the engine air filters. What you are missing is unclear.

I have an air filter over my battery, I have that piece. As mentioned before, apparently the engine cover serves as another filter so to say. That's the piece I am missing the engine housing cover

Rudney that part alone will cause my car to act like it wants to die when I'm coming to a stop? And I'm thinking when I got it fixed they took it. I wasn't even thinking at the time, it was winter and I just wanted my car fixed while I was on the road. So now I'm on the hunt for one.

Well that's your air filter.. your lucky if this hasn't caused any serious damage to your engine. If i were you I'd go straight back to that repair shop and bash them about it. Totally unacceptable. The filter above the battery is not an air filter (per definition) its a dust filter for your AC, has no connection to your engine "air filter". Your engine cover is your only air filter.

Yes, absence of the air filter assembly messes with the engine control. The ECU uses inputs from various sensors to determine the fuel/air mixture. The MAF (mass air flow) sensor that sits just below this cover test the incoming air for density. It expects a certain range of air pressure (or vacuum). Without the filters in place, the incoming air flow much more freely and "fools" the MAF sensor to return an erroneous value to the ECU, thus causing the mixture formation to be incorrect.

So you have been driving your car with no air filters for two years, sucking all dirt, grit and bugs directly into your engine? First, I'm surprised you have not had issues and a check engine light before. As Rodney said, just having it seated wrong will cause a light. I would think having it gone will also. But the bigger issue is two years without it. People test engines w/o oil to see how fast they are destroyed, but I've never seen a test of the long-term effects of no air filter. But it can't be good. Does your car burn any oil? The grit that gets in your combustion chambers can score the cylinder walls. Just so you know once you get a filter housing, it's not just a piece of plastic. Inside are two air filters about the size of the lid on a shoe box and two inches thick. Make sure you get new ones when you get the housing.

You can get a new one on parts.com for under $100:

https://www.parts.com/index.cfm?fuse...0-Base-V8-5.0- Liter-GAS
Looks like about $335 for the two parts.

Oops! That's $222 on parts.com - I had also found a few on eBay for under $100 (I got a bit ahead of myself on that post!). That's just for the main cover/filter housing (part #1 on the diagram). The front cover (part #12) is just for decoration and not necessary. The "pipe elbows) (#4 and #5) are necessary, if they are also missing.
