ignition and steering lock

Can someone please help me? I drive a 2007 Clk350 coupe. My remote batteries were low so in order to unlock the car I would have to be really close. I jumped out of my car and went back in it without using the remote. As I was about to start the car, the wheel locked and the key would not turn at all. Just a bit a of background, every once in* a while when I'm driving my wheel would get really tight as I turn and I'd have to restart the car for it to loosen up. Back to the story, I kept pressing the unlock button and after some time, the car lights came on, the wheel loosened and I'm the key turned. Just before the car goes to start, it made a clicking noise, lights shut off and wheel locked again. I tried replacing the remote batteries but it still did not work. Any help would be very much appreciated guys. Thanks.

FYI, the batteries in the SmartKey fobs have nothing to do with its operation in the electronic ignition switch (EIS). The batteries are only used for RCL ( remote central locking). The EIS provides an inductive current to the SmartKey to power it's functions. You may have a defective key. If you have more than one key (and you should!) do both have the same problem?

Sounds like you need a new car battery. Or you have a loose connection, or corrosion on the battery.

Another possibility ( as I posted over on benzworld):

Another possible culprit is a weak vehicle battery. It should be 12.6v at rest. A weak battery would not cause power steering problems, but both increased steering effort and a discharged battery could both be symptoms of a problem with the accessory belt. If it is slipping, say due to a bad idler or tensioner pulley, then both the alternator and power steering pump would not be operating.

do it soon or you will probably be stuck somewhere. These cars draw a lot of juice to start with all the computers etc and once the battery starts to go it goes fast.
