W209 TPMS Question

I have a 2008 CLK550 and I have replaced all the TPMS sensors a few months ago when one went dead. Now, I am getting a new error every now and then that tells that the TPMS is not operational. In scanning it I found that I have lost connection with the #1 wheel sensor. So, which is #1,2,3 and 4 ?
Also, if the valve stem is the transmitter, where are the receivers? They have to be close to the tires dont they?
Thanks in advance!

1 = Left Front
2 = Right Front
3 = Left Rear
4 = Right Rear

There is a single control module that receives transmission from the wheel sensors located in the trunk (left side, I believe).

Thanks Rudeney,
So my left front is where the problem is. If the module is in the rear, where are the actual receivers or 'antennas' for lack of a better word? If it can know where they are and they were not programmed in, there should be something to let them know which one is which. I know they are very low range.

The sensors in each wheel are transmitters. They use generator for power. The generators are activated by the tire's rolling motion. The receiver is the module int he trunk. That's it - no other antennae. My guess is the front left sensor is defective.

resurrecting an old post...
I'm trying to perform a full TPMS retrofit and of course in the process creating a DIY for forums members.
I ripped out the carpeting on the left side of the trunk where the rear SAM is located however I can't seem to find where the TPMS module would sit. There is no obvious place. Can someone take a look in their car with TPMS and snap a pic? Or if anyone knows off the top of their head?

I'm willing to shoot a pic, but do you have a pic of what the unit looks like? I have never paid that much attention to what everything is back there beyond checking my top fluid level a couple times in 5 and a half years. Never needed to.

Disregard the part number, but it should look like that, a white box with an antenna. I'm looking at the coupe, but it might be similar in the cab.

That should not be too hard to spot. I'll look tonight or first thing in the morning.

OK, so I totally failed on the left side. Did not take a pic because there was nothing to take a pic of. It's just the SAM/fuse box, conv top pump and lines, and then tucked up near the top behind the big structural member is a ribbed box I assume is an amp? But if that TPMS receiver is on that side, it is well hidden. Rodney is on this thread. Doesn't WIS say exactly where it is?

StarFinder (part of SDS) usually has great photos, but not for this on the W209. I did find a simple sketch diagram that shows it being located in the trunk, left side. On the W211, there is a photo that shows it there, just behind the rear SAM/fuse panel.

Yeah I tired looking it up on starfinder but just a blankpic. EPC shows it in the rear left on the trunk.. There's no obvious place for it however..

I may look again on the back side of the SAM. I stuck my hand back there and it's boxy, but I felt no antenna.

When I said it's "behind" the SAM, I mean longitudinal to the car. Here's the W211 pic:

Unfortunately our cars don't look much like that. The SAM in ours is pretty close to the tail light assembly.

In my R171 it is actually on the RHS near the tail light but it is very visible. Maybe that's the case for the w209 as well? The wiring harness branch from the module to the rear SAM is pretty long so I suspect that might be why we're not finding it on the LHS.

WIS says it's on the left side. Here's one photo I found:

That makes it look like it's in plain sight. But that's a coupe. In the cab the top pump is where that SAM is and the SAM is moved rearward. Still, now I'm curious enough to look further. I guess it's a sign of a complex car that you cannot find a part even if you know where it is supposed to be.

Found it

Don't know where it is on a coupe, but on a convert it was moved to the right side. It just snaps into a black plastic "tray." Here are three pics. Rodney, do you know what is in the metal cage? There is one on each side. Also, in my search I finally figured out where they hid the LoJack transponder the original owner had installed. It's on the back of the SAM.

Well, somebody needs to call MBZ and tell them to update WIS! I think the item in that Faraday Cage is the TeleAid transceiver.

Unfortunately Yidney I'm looking for the coupe, and the convertible is completely different. I used the pic from WIS that Rudeney provided but in its place is a Temic control unit (not quite sure what it is). Does anyone have a coupe that could check?

What do you have in that location on the right side? Nothing - no black tray? Given how many wire connectors I have all over my car that do not connect to anything (and I have every option but rear seat airbags), I'm guessing that your car has the connector for the TPMS monitor already. Maybe look for the connector instead of looking for a blank mounting location. It's not real clear in my photos, but you can see it's a pretty small, rectangular, two-wire connector.

You can see there's no clear spot on either side.

Yeah, that does look just a wee bit different. You have way more stuff one right side. I still have all those same orange wires (fiber optic?) that you do, but whereas yours are actually hooked up, mine all just end in a little ball of foam and lay in the hole back there.

Own 2005 CLK500, but drive 2011 Sienna :)
Interesting, if there is only one common signal receiver (in the trunk) for the TPMS sensors- how does it know what sensor is responsible for which wheel?
I have the TPMS light on - the code refers to no signal from right front sensor. If I will swap the front wheels - it will still show that there is no signal from the right front wheel even I put it on the left side?

I think it should follow the bad sensor, If that is the problem. You will probably need to drive the car 5 miles or so for it to switch. If it does not follow the wheel, you can reset the TPMS and drive it about 5 miles again.
