Don't know if this helps - the key has three positions: 1) simple electronics (windows & seats), 2) all systems, 3) Ignition. If you're using keyless, do not step on the brake punch the start button once for position 1, twice for position 2. Position 2 is what you want - I believe.

mine has a key not push start.
I've changed my cluster to an amg 63 cluster. Everything works since the change, all the settings, navi, radio controls, but i wonder if this could be the issue? Just seems strange that it would effect nothing else but time change

There are 2 possible reasons. first of all there is no GPS signal which can cause your issue as the gps isn't figuring out where you are. second of all the cluster you have installed isn't communicating with the Commad for some weird reasons which probably means you can change the time from within the cluster. you can code those things through STAR (wither comand manages the time, or the cluster)

I'll pull the car out doors tonight and try again.

If you swapped clusters, there could be a coding issue. With NAV, the cluster should be coded to get its time from the GPS in the NAV. Without NAV, the cluster needs to be coded so that the time can be set manually on it. I'm not sure what might happen if NAV is present but the cluster is coded for no NAV. Also, there is a difference in the NAV system as to whether they talk to the clusters. Older models have the button labeled "SERV", newer labeled "SYS". The cluster much match or you will have issues.
Also, I just checked my car (I have the older one with the SERV button). I can set DST in any mode - no key, key in position 1, or key in position 2 (car running or not). And in the garage with not SAT signal.

Thanks Rodney, my car is an 09 550 and the cluster is out of an 08 E63. Both had navi and when i use my navi it works through the cluster like it did with the original cluster. The 63 cluster works perfect all the options work the only issue was the expected ----- for odometer and the sos system had an error message in the cluster. But all the steering wheel features work. And the extra features in the 63 cluster like oil temp, gear indicator all work.
i didnt have a chance to pull it outside and re try it. Worst case ill pop in the old cluster and set the time and go back to the 63 cluster.

actually no need for that, just set the time from the cluster itself in the settings menu and not from the command and you should be good to go. My dad's ml350 in an american import and GMT+2 isn't listed as an timezone at all. so i used STAR and made the cluster use degrees Celsius and configured the cluster to set the time and not command. problem solved.

Instructions are in your owner's manual. If you don't have one, then you can download a PDF copy from the "owner's" section of http://mbusa.com. It's very simple - you do it through the instrument cluster menus.
