Oil Leak/pool

I noticed a bit of oil residue on the underside back edge of the engine cover while doing some routine maintenance. One of those items was to top off the oil.

Upon trying to identify the source I could see a pool of oil on top of the engine below the air intake/MAF sensor. I initially thought it may be the cam plugs but there is no oil around either of the three of them.

Can anyone tell from the pic what kind of a problem I may have and if it could actually be the cam plug somehow. I had planned to visit the dyno later this week, but I would not risk it without getting this resolved. thanks.

I did some more checking to locate the source and I can not. I pushed my hand as far as I could into the opening between the bottom of the MAF/air intake and probed for fresh oil. I could not find a spot, other than the pool pictured, with fresh oil.

I think I have an oil drip under high RPM, else the oil would not be so localized. I don't know enough about engines to make even a good guess about the source.

I have an appointment with my indy tomorrow for this and an error code of P0025, which has to do with a CPS. These two things may or may not be related, but likely are.

So i've been trying to understand exactly where you found oil. If its the engine cover/air filter box the most probable reason to this would be filter oil (all filters come oiled) its normal after time that the oil becomes visible. Also second possibility would be your indy used a bit too much oil wetting the rubber outlet of the engine cover/air filter box.

The oil is a "puddle"/"pool" and not just oily residue. It is on top of the engine, just forward of where the engine connects to the tranny and just forward of the underside of the MAF/air intake.

There would never be that much oil in the filter (K&N) and the oil used for that is not motor oil. I do not put any oil on the filter box/intake rubber seal.

What lead me to look farther was a "smudge" of oil on the filter box/engine cover that was not larger than an inch in diameter. In the second pic you can see the puddle of oil. Since it isn't being "sprayed" on other areas, I think it is a drip under high revs.

The car is currently at the shop. will update.

It looks as if the issue may be the AOS (air-oil separator). I will update when I get the car back.

weird, I've never seen oil there. Could be a degraded oil fume line (i think thats what its called).

so the puddle is on the intake manifold?

Yes, it's on the intake.

My understanding is the AOS separates the air and the oil of the blow by gases and sends the air into the intake to be burned again (pollution reduction) and returns the oil to the oil pan.

So it could be coming from a line as Daniel said. I'll try to talk to the tech doing the work when I pick it up, and post what he says.

Got the car back last week after having the oil separator replaced. I checked it today and the it seems that the oil separator fixed the problem. There was no new oil; what was there was sort very dark and/or sorta caramelized.

The service tech cleaned up most of the oil but I removed even the caramelized oil in the pockets of the top of intake manifold. I'll check it again this weekend.
