Convertible maintanace questions

I was reading a few fourms about how to clean and lubricate the seals on convertibles . When its cold the seals squeak like crazy when I hit a pot hole or uneven ground . I tried to order the Mercedes seal lub and its like $40 . I came across this video on your tube and it basically says you need white lithium grease for the joints and silicon spray for the seals . Is the Mercedes lubricant just an expensive remarketed silicon spray ?

I did not watch the video, yet some do use silicon spray on weather-strips.

Di-electric grease is a long proven weather-strip lubricant technique...inexpensive too.

Gummi Fledge is a German made brand that is a specific weather-strip lube....big dispenser might be $40.

White lithium grease for the joints IMO is okay just watch for staining from over application. Drop of motor oil may work well too.

I am unaware of a specific joint lube for convertible top mechanisms.

Good luck.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
The $40 vial of MBZ lubricant is a miracle drug! It will last you a lifetime as a little goes a long way. I seem to recall reading that it is a special lubricant made by DuPont (or similar chemical company) that is very hard, even impossible, to obtain in small quantities, so the dealer price of $40 is good.

I used this on my seals about two years ago and just this year did I start getting more noise. I've been meaning to lube it again, but then I replace the canvas, and I can tell you the new canvas is so tight, it has quieted all the noise again.

Don't use regular silicone spray. It will actually makes things squeak worse. I use Gummi whatever it's called, but may also try the MB stuff Rodney mentioned. But I just wanted to let you know I tracked down a potential major source of creaks over bumps that is hidden. If you run your fingers along the headliner until it terminates under that long plastic piece that is above your head - the piece with the round plug that covers the top lock cylinder, you will feel that the headliner ends in a rubber strip. That strip gets very dry and rubs on the plastic piece. Remove the plastic piece and lube that strip. Drove me nuts tracking that down.

Yeah, that's it. I like it because it leaves nothing on the rubber. No "lube" feel of any kind. Not sure how it works.
