Dealership trying to fleece me.

Have 2003 CLK 98'K on it, doing routine repairs, brakes shocks struts, all the stuff that gets old on a 13 yr old car.Well I figured that I would replace the fuel filter ( yes the filter is inside the car under the back seat) called up two different dealerships and they both told me that the price was $395 & $425. and that I had to buy the whole fuel assy, Now what I'm asking is this true or just another case of Dealership scam

I will be the last to defend the dealership, but I think this is just a case of them being mistaken. later model CLKs (350 and 550)had the fuel filter integrated into the sender unit, located inside the tank. Yours is a traditional inline filter mounted in front of the left rear wheel. I'd just order it from one of your favorite mail order source - autohausaz, rmeuropean, pelican, etc. The Mann is usually $35-$45.

Rudman I value your sage advice and tech knowledge, but the filter is under the backseat as i had a 25 cent hose split on me that ended up costing me $300 in towing fees, the hose went too the ff to the pump and leaked gas when the fuel pump was running. When I the car on my lift I was going to change out the ff then as I also thought it was on the body like my 2000 CLK. but alas not so.I think what we as owners are running into is that my car was made in Nov of 03 so Techncally its 04.i think the early 03's had the outside ff but was moved to the tank in mid production

My 2005 CLK 320 (EU-spec) has the fuel filter in front of the left rear wheel.

It looks like there was a changeover in the V8 from the external to the internal fuel filter during CLK500 (M113) production. It's not based on model year, but on chassis number. I am finding conflicting information on the V6 - one place in SDS shows it always external, another shows a chassis number changeover.

I want to thank everybody for there help. This is one of the best forums going, I will take photos and post them when I change out the filter. And in reply to Rudeney the parts guy did ask me for my VIN#, so maybe we have cleared up this long running debate and maybe post this in sticky?
