Just guessing, are the speed sensors the 6 solenoids on top of the speed sensor?

Noe, the solenoids control the flow of fluid through the valve body. The speed sensors are Hall Effect sensors (i.e. magnetic detectors) built into the conductor plate.

It is OK to drive in limp mode, but it will be annoying at best. It will basically be locked in 3rd gear, and the torque converter lock-up will be disabled. It will feel like it;s Motor boating". Other than avoiding situations where you need strong acceleration, it should be fine.
