2008 clk550

Hi guys, I am thinking about buying a 08 clk550 with 80k miles. I read on this forum that some cars have problems with the timing chain and or tensioners. the vin number on this car is WDBTJ72H98F243237.Is this one to worry about? The car is 2.5 hours away and I don't want to waste my time if im going to have a 5k repair soon. thanks in advance for any info.

MY2008 will be beyond the timing chain idler sprocket failure range. It may still experience camshaft solenoid failure, but that's only $100 in parts and maybe a 2-hour easy DIY. When begs the question, are you going to do your own work? if not, these can be expensive cars to own. On average, parts are not much more expensive than any other car, but labor can be higher, especially if you use a dealer or specialized indy. It will eat rear tires - if you get 20K miles out of a pair, consider it a blessing.

Thanks for the response guys. I own a tire store and repair shop so 90 percent of the problems im not too worried about. my guys can fix most the problems and the cost of parts and tires the store will pay for. im just hoping I don't get into internal engine problems.

At 80k miles it may be time for some suspension components if they have not been done. As Rodney said, not bad if you DIY, but much more if you cannot. But I have not found my car to be overall expensive to own. It just has not had many issues at 62k. I did just replace my front control arms because of worn bushings. About a $400 DIY, but that is by far the most expensive thing done to the car in nearly 6 years of ownership. As for rear tires, 20k would not be a blessing, it would be a frickin' miracle. I'm pushing it to get 13k out of mine.

No, past the gear problems these engines are bullet proof.

Yep, the "balance shaft" issue is the worst chronic problem with these M272/M273 engines. Internally, they are as solid as any MBZ engine. There are occasional problems with other parts, like leaky cam plugs or the oil centrifuge, and defective intake manifold tumble flaps, but internal engine problems are just unheard of.

Definitely suspension attention will be needed in the near future. Probably in the 90k range. Seems to be the weak point on this car from my experience. Should be clear of timing chain issue and 7G transmission issues. So far 3 of my 4 cam magnets have been replaced (2 by previous owner, 1 by my own indy). I actually have been getting the check engine light for my driver's side intake (the last one left, but PITA to remove lol). Overall, I have no complaints about the car except for suspension repairs and lack of tech.

Yeah, that last one requires removing the oil cooler. Honestly, its not as big a job as you think. Drain about a gallon of coolant from the radiator, and the cooler is held on with a few bolts. Just be ready wit a rag to catch a few drips of oil and coolant. You should probably replace the gasket on the oil cooler, but you may be able to get away with not doing that. Worst case, don't replace it and if you get a little leak, you'll have to spend another hour doing it later.
