Fuel gauge quit

So driving home from Maine with a 3/4 full tank I suddenly saw that the fuel indicator had no bars. I checked the range in the display and it showed ---. A while after that the gas pump light lit up and I got three bars on the fuel level indicator and the range display said that I needed to fuel at the next opportunity.

Based on the MPG and how far I had driven I knew that I had plenty of fuel, so I kept driving.

When I got home I tried shutting the ignition on and off again. Still showing three bars.

So what do you guys think is going on? I haven't put my code reader on it yet, but will see.

My plan is to fill it up tomorrow and see what the gauge shows. If it still shows three bars I will assume that the sender unit has crapped out. How hard is it to get to?

After the car cooled down I took my code reader out to see if it would tell me anything.

When I turned the key the gauge worked.

Scanning codes I got:

B1134 Fuel sensor tight installation recognition: The signal from the fuel tank sensor 1 is not plausible

I cleared the code and it stayed cleared, so it indicates some flakiness in the sensor.

How easy is it to get to that sensor?

NO LONGER ACTIVE
I have not heard of this happening in the W209, but it used to happen on my W163 ML. The fix was to "reboot" the fuel sender. To do this, I'd switch on the ignition to position 2 (engine stopped) and then unplug the sender wiring harness for a few minutes. In your car, the sender harness connector is under the left rear seat cushion if you want to give this a try.

Thanks Rodney, hope it doesn't happen again, but of it does, I'll give it a try.

On the other hand, the car is under used car warranty, so I may just have the seller replace the unit.
