Moisture in door handle (keyless-go)

Have a problem with my door handle this morning. Keyless go functions don't work and when I press the pad on the inner part of the handle(the button to open the door) I'm hearing a 'squelching' sound like there's water in the handle.

Is this a case of letting it dry out or is a new door handle needed?

Thanks

There are two little micro switches in there. If you have enough water in there that you hear it, I think you may need a new handle. Mine stops working for a day or two a couple times a year after precipitation, but it has always started working again so I have not worried about it. But I never had it sound like it had water in it.

I am really confused on this. I have never seen an MBZ KeylessGo system that uses "pads" in the door handle. The only ones I've seen use a capacitive touch sensor that is basically the entire metal part of the handle. On mine, can just brush my hand against the top edge of the door handle and it unlocks.

On the clk they are physical buttons, not touch sensors. You have to actually press it and it moves. Outside it's a square button. Inside it's a long lever.

Maybe it's just age taking its toll on my memory, but I drove "everything" back in 2004 when I worked for MBZ and I do not remember the handles having a mechanical pad. I remember them all being touch sensitive - E, S, CL, CLK, SL, SLK, G, Maybach, SLR, etc.

This black 'pad' on the inside of the handle has the unlock switch in it

I end up replacing mine about every 2 years.
The 'lock' function on the outside of the handle always works fine.

There's a thread on here somewhere about a guy who pried his handle apart an replaced the switches. But they are for sure switches. You can rub or touch my handles all day long and they will not open the door. The press required is pretty light, but they are switches.

Replacing the handle, or the switch? The DIY I recall seeing looked like way more trouble than it was worth.

Apparently, there are two styles of door handles - mechanical switches, and touch-sensitive. I wonder if those with with mechanical style could replace them with the touch-sensitive handles?

Definitely two styles, but not on a CLK. I'm sure they are all mechanical - old, like everything else on the car. I doubt any other style would work - color, holes in the same place, compatible electronics, etc.

Both sides are totally going haywire coz of the rain here. Most commonly, the unlock pad locks the car and the lock button doesn't work.

Is there a guide to dismantling/disassembling the door handles? Any sources where I can get the switches from? Maybe I can repair them myself without spending a fortune just to get the doors to work properly.

There is a very detailed DIY with photos that I was referring to above. Can't remember if it originated on this forum or not. Google and you will find it. But it looked like way more trouble than it's worth. It's not meant to be done. You have to source micro switches from somewhere, glue it all up, seal it with silicone. Not worth my time to just end up with a home made handle.

^^Yeah I've taken apart 3 of my dead door handles (see pics above) and it is never, ever a 'clean' process.
Lots of scratches and broken plastic tabs. You have to cut the rubber on the backside of the handle to get to the microswitches.

Yeah, thinking of just replacing it.

That being said...

Anyone know of a source for cheap door handles? (Preferably in EU)

The MB dealer here is really expensive and I'd like a cheaper source seeing as they fail every so often.

Any help in this would be great!!

Thanks again guys!

Ambit, what's the part number for that drivers door handle? I found one on eBay that says "CLS63 CLS550" and I'm wondering if they're same. I'm not buying that one cuz he says "Not sure if the keyless go sensors work" lol! Also, I assume the keyed part separates and we keep our original, right?
