W209 clk320 cabriolet top inop
Hi. I rececently bought a 205 clk320 cabriolet with a roof that does not work. Got it cheap hoping that it is something I can repair myself. Currently, the roof is up but when you you turn the key on ir says "roof is opening" on the dash. It is not opening. The roof does nothing at all. When I press or pull the on the roof button all I get is an error message to visit workshop. Any ideas on where I should start my search? Also, I should mention that the headliner has stains on it as if one of the the lifts or locks has been leaking oil. I check the pump resivoir when I first bought the car and it was full. I have manually put the roof up and down a couple of times and now the resivoir is below the low mark.

It definitely sounds like you have a hydraulic leak, but since it does not see the top as finished closing or opening, you probably have an electrical problem, too. It could be a bad microswitch that reports the top's position to the controller, or even a bad controller. Your best bet is to start with the electrical side and determine faults there. You need to scan for hcodes on the top controller (a.k.a. roll bar system). This will require a specialized tool like SDS (dealer's Star Diagnosis System) or iCarsoft i980 (~$125 at Amazon). Once you know the codes, then we can help with the parts you need. As for the hydraulic leak, stains on the headliner are from the front latch cylinder. Another common leak will be from the main lift cylinders, but that fluid ends up deep in the trunk so it's not easy to see the puddles.

Is there a way to manually move it up and down? Seems it could just be lost and not know where it is. If you cycle it manually, it may, at least partially, resolve some of the issues.
