Whine.
Recently purchased a 2004 CLK 320 coupe with only 56800 miles. Maintenance done and then some. It's my fifth CLK after 2005 320 convertible (2 ea): a 2005 CLK 500 coupe: and a 2009 CLK 550 convertible. This one has a whine - about 1500 RPM under light throttle at around 30 mph and also around 1500 rpm between 40-45MPH. More throttle may obscure the slight whine. Local Indy did not hear it - engine may have been warmer. Any ideas? Any advice/comment appreciated. Thanks.

Then it's not in the engine, torque converter, or transmission fluid pump as all of those would still whine in neutral. It could be in the transmission, driveshaft or differential. It's going to be difficult to track down if you can't reproduce it in the garage. They do make special wireless microphones for tracking down noises like that.
