HI again! It has been found that my instrument cluster does not work properly.Mercedes' workshop says I have to replace it with a brand new one for SEK 15,000.A used one is not enough because it is not possible to re-code.IS IT TRUE? SINCERELY
It is possible to install a used cluster. There are two ways to do this. One is to swap the EEPROM chips from your cluster to the donor one. The other way is to erase the odometer value in the door cluster and then SDS will recognize it just like a new "virgin" unit and can then code it to your car. I know of a few shops in the USA that will do this (either swap EEPROMs or erase an ofomoter) for about $200 (plus your cost for the used cluster). There are also guys wit tools like Tacho Universal that can code a used cluster for you so no chip swapping or SDS coding is necessary.
Not sure where you are but if you can find an "old time speedometer" shop, and yes they're still out there, the ones that are still in business have progressed to do doing what the previous poster suggested.
In the middle of July I send it to a company (ACTRONICS) but they couln't repair it. They thought it's some chip is burnt. I paid SEK 1000 and they send me back to Mercedes. As I mentioned ealier Mercedes want SEK 15000 for a new one, no other options was not possible.
Is the first and cheapest option still trying to find someone who can repair it?
When I google, there are a lot of companies who works with cluster instruments.
Second option is trying to find a used one, then follow YOUR advices and find someone with the right tools who can make transfer.

You told that some cluster that you listed are VIN dependent. How is it with this one A2095407311? There is a scrap yard about 100km from my place that have one for SEK 2500.
There is a grey one available on ebay if you want to change the color to red. I have the black interior part I could send you if you need it. It took about a week to completely take apart, paint, and polish if you have the tools. You would need small screw drivers, exacto blades, variable speed Dremel tool with pointed bits and polishing wheels or model making tools as well as a clean ventilated place to spray paint. The one tool I did not have in my box and purchased was a jewelers or watch makers magnifier glasses. Those were invaluable in seeing all of the tiniest pieces and details on that scale but I use them for detailing my car and they are the best investment for applying Dr. Color chip too, the details revealed are unbelievable.
