You can swap for the "premium" ACC panel with the screen, but since your car does not have the proper dampers, you won't get the additional features like full dual-zone airflow selection and the activated charcoal feature

Does Mercedes change the charcoal air filter at regular yearly services? I wonder if mine has ever been changed...

I think it doesn't . My car was services most of its live by Mercedes , but when I was changing my chaharcoal filters I found a date stamp "26.02.03" and the car was build 05/14/03. Base of the filters condition they were not "old stock" filters 😃

Keep in mind that the charcoal filter is only used when you activate it on the ACC panel.

There is no way the carbon is still sequestering any odors after 17 years even if you just use the feature very sparingly. They should really be replaced every year, I know I will going forward. I assumed Mercedes did because of the nature of how these filters work, once organic compounds have bound to all the carbon it's useless. Seems odd that they have dedicated charcoal filters as an option in these cars yet replace them every 60k miles at most. Guess they rely on placebo and/or people forgetting how effective they can be.

At least based on my wife's feedback changing those filters fixed an issue with strange smell in the cabin.

I can tell you that even at 10 years old and never replacing the carbon filter, if I go behind a stinky vehicle, I could pres that button to activate it and the smell would instantly go away. Now, i hardly ever used the thing because my CLK was a cabriolet, and it made no sense to activate it with the top down.

That's surprising to me, as mine hasn't worked that well since I can remember and doesn't seem to do anything anymore. I used it pretty much daily though. I guess it all comes down to how often you use it, and yeah on a convertible it makes no sense to use. I still think Mercedes is airing way too far on the side of assuming disuse rather than use when it comes to their replacement intervals (if they even replace them at 60k, that is just my assumption could be totally off base). Then again this is the company that thought my transmission would never need it's fluid changed haha. I love Mercedes, just find it amusing. On one site that sells them these filters they have a video and the guy recommends replacing them every two years but replaces his own every year. I guess he could be biased as he sells them, and obviously without knowing how much someone uses the filters as well as how polluted the air is and the humidity of the air where they drive any suggestion is a shot in the dark.

My dealer has pushed to change it every service it seems, have let them once in two years, but I don't keep the feature turned on because it makes the air conditioner louder and work harder, IMO.
