Paint Chips............(help)

Hello, i am new to this forum and this is my first post. I just bought a 2005 CLK 500 Coupe in Alabaster white with Stone interior.

I have a small paint chip on the hood of my car, just needed to know how i can get it fixed.

I have something already on the car that i got done when i bought it, it was done by the mercedes benz dealership, its called the 3m transparent coating or something like that, i just hope it is on there because i thought it would prevent paint chips, and i have gotten a paint chip. Is it possible that i dont have the 3m coat on my car, and they just told me it was done? is there any way i can check if the 3m clearcoat plastic is on there?

What do you guys do about your paint chips?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You should be able to tell that the coating is on the car I have this plastic coating and you can tell, I did get a chip on the hood because the coating does not wrap around the hood to the under side. It was a very small chip on the edge of the hood. how much did it cost for the coating you got I have a clear plastic coating on the front of the car. Maybe you got something different but if you look close you can see where it begins and ends on the hood.

If they 3M'd your car, it should be pretty obvious up close. You'll see a plastic film.

My detail shop told me....

my detail shop told me that if you have a paint chip then all you have to do is go to the dealership and tell them to order you a paint thingy... i dont know what it is called, but it looks like a nail polish bottle, and all you have to do is apply it and it will cover the spot really well, basically you wont even notice it.

anyone tried this method?

I have the 3M plastic installed in my 2004 CLK320. First it was the hood and it extends about 12-18 inches up the hood. It was so good that I later installed it to wrap around my whole front bumper, the side mirrors as well as the roof (about 12 inches, wrap around the front end of the sunroof). Now I am thinking to apply it to my rear bumper. You see, I do mostly highway driving between Toronto and Montreal (about 500 KM each way).

One time I was parked on the street, while I was still in my car, a large SUV came to park in front of me. His tire squeezed into my car and broke my front side marker. Around the side marker, it was all black and the 3M plastic was scratched and peeled off a bit. I replaced the side marker ($12 CAN) and the little piece of 3M plastic ($20). The black area was cleaned off by regular car wax. Without the 3M plastic, I might have to repaint the whole bumper.

Since my car is silver, the 3M plastic does not show too much. All you see is a line on the hood where the plastic ends. If you have the 3M plastic on your hood, you will definitely see it.

As for the touch-up paint, it is extremely difficult to apply. You can improve the chip but you will see it when you get close. Someone suggested to use the autosharp pen (www.autovisuals.com) but I never use it.

I have the dealer paint touch up kit. It "okay" if you are careful but not a really good solution. I normally abandon the idea of using its integral brush and buy a very small artists brush and dip it in thinners first. Then apply, leave it for a few days, reapply, rub down and use the clearcoat. You need to be patient and have a steady hand............so no Poitin for 24hours previously ! []

We dont have the 3M stuff over here, but I've used the "chipsaway" guys a few times with excellent results !

Another way to apply touch-up paint to simply use a tooth pick. Like Ben'sCLK said, you have to be patient and apply a few very, very thin coat to the chip over a few days period.
