... Even though i havent actually driven the clk500 i am assuming it to be quite similar to the 430 in performance and comfort (only a 35 hp increase).
That exactly mirrors my point, because the new CLK500 is 300 pounds heavier than the 430, the 35HP gain is insignificant and provides only a fractional acceleration gain.
Therefore, for a step up it's the CLK55 AMG. It's a full second faster than the CLK500 in 0-60 mph acceleration.

M3 or CLK500 is a difficult question. Assuming equal reliability, I'd definitely take the M3. However, given all the talk about M3 engine failures, I'm not sure I'd take a M3 at all.

Comparison
Obviously the comparison on performance should be between the CLK55 and the M3 since they have similar performance figures. Comparing the M3 to the 500 isn't comparing apples to apples (the price of the cars is not an issue as the M3 is cheaper but so is a Camaro Z28).
