Intake mods

I remember seeing a thread about phenolic spacers and thermotec wrap for the intake box and am wondering if anyone has tried this. If so, what were the results. I searched this forum and came up empty. I did find some threads in the E55 forum regarding this, but no results have been posted.

Has anyone tried this? Is it worth the effort?

I attached some heat reflection tape on the bottom of the airbox and it did cool off way faster with the hood off compaed to stock. Don't know about its gain but I think it helps engine to get the cool air.

There was a guy in Texas a while back that did this mod on his W210 E55. Seemed to have worked well. I'll try and find the link.....

***EDIT***

Found it!

No I have not tried it. Not sure I want to slap all that in my engine bay! I'm in the middle of my busy season, so it's all I can do to drive the 55! First things first! lol

All of them, as much as I can...
I have thermotec on my intake boxes

I've installed thermotec adhesive-backed sheets on the undersides of the airbox in the 55 and the E430 (side that faces the engine). I'm sure it has cooled the insides of the box but no measureable results as far as I can tell on the 55. I've shaved .5 secs off my 0-60 times on the e430 but that may be a combination of the upsolute chip, K&N filter, and thermotec.

Interesting. I perused quite a few SAE articles regarding intake temperatures and their effect on different engine performance and found an interesting standard: By using the SAE correction factor "B" for temperature's effect on horsepower, we see that the correction factor for temperature is approximately 1% per ten degrees. That is, you get a 1% increase in horsepower for each 10 degrees you lower the temperature of the incoming air into your filter.

So, if you effectively lower your intake temps by 10 degrees with the heat shield, you can free up 1% HP...and in my case for my CLK430, that's about 2 HP. Not really the 10-15 you guys are hoping for.

However, when comparing the extremes of winter and summer weather, say 10F vs. 80F and using the 10degree/1% power gain correction factor equation, in my 430's case: 80F-10F = 70 * .10 = 7% power increase for a 275hp car which is somewhere around a 20 horsepower difference between the extreme summer and extreme winter case, then I guess cold air should be taken seriously.

thermotec sheets

1) Where can I buy the thermotec sheets, 2) can you put the sheets on the sides, top, bottom, inside of the boxes or only on the outside? Can this in anyway void the warranty for some crazy reason?

Thanks
