Averaged about 27.6 on recent road trip, I was happy. Traveled approximately 500 miles, mostly highway, some hills and dropped the hammer a few times.

Outstanding

It still amazes me that these high-performance cars can get really excellent mileage as well

I always see 17-20MPG around town. Hey, its not a toyota prius.
My neighboor has one of those...she likes to tell me her gas milage she gets....I tell her for every gallon of gas she saves I burn three!

I get over 27mpg on trips to the mountains, so that's up/down hills and passing people who are going slow (which is sometimes quite a few). I usually end up going 450 miles on a tank, surprising that my CLK is doing what my C43 used to do in terms of mileage, and still going a lot faster. A couple days ago I went snowboarding and the trip computer reported 27mpg at 71mph average speed, 5.5 hours total. This is through towns and 25mph school zones, so I had to slow down often, and the mileage was still good.

On top of that, this is on 265 wide 18" tires. The 285s get a little less mileage but still decent.

A Toyota Prius may get great mileage, but the hybrid technology is much more efficient in stop & go driving. The highway mileage isn't as good as it should be, and this could be attributed to the box shape as well. On the other hand, our CLKs do great on the highway compared to stop & go. I would say 50% increase over city driving is a decent improvement.

Chappy:
The 26 mpg you indicated....

is it computed by the command system and the 26 mpg is what it showed
or
did you figure it out manually...ie, fill up the gas tank, zero the tripometer,
drive to your destination, fill up the tank, record the amount of gallons used
and then divide the miles traveled on the tripometer by the amount of
gallons used...(sorry if I seemed full of verbage...just wanted to ensure that
if we both computed it manually, we were doing it the same way)

I have not done any LOOOONG trips so I checked on one occasion, I drove
for 50 miles, non stop and kept it under 60 (that was so hard), and the
command system said I had 22 mpg...so do I need a tune up or does the
mpg reported on the command get better the further the distance?

This was the average on my display. I think short trips hurt the electronically calculated fuel mileage...on a cold engine at start up it displays something like 12.4 mpg, then climbs as the car is driven at higher/constant average speeds.
