My car on Autotrader..already got a scam?
Well, I'm still trying to sell my CLK55. I just placed an ad with Autotrader this Sunday Nov 20th and I got an e-mail today from some guy offering me close to my asking price of $46K. he offered me $45.5K. Just to feel this person out I counter offered with $45.75K. Now I get an e-mail from him saying he will pay $46K. WTF? Why wouldn't he at least go for the lower offer I made. then this e-mail is very confusing. has scam writen all over it. Don't worry, I won't fall for anything. If anyone wants my car they will have to come visit me in person and talk.
here's the e-mail I got:
Hello,
How are you today? Thanks again for the detailed information provided on your vehicle for sale am happy to inform you that my client has accepted to proceed with the purchase of your vehicle at $46,000 .Please be advised of the urgency of the transaction ,i have just discussed with the customer not long ago regarding payment and pickup arrangements,He instructed me to inform you that payment will get to you in a cashier check of $53,300 which is a refund payment of a cancelled order earlier made by my customer.Due to company policy this check has to be made out in this amount to you, because company policy only allows a refund payment on one cashier check,so you are required to deduct cost of car $46,000 when the check clears with your bank and refund balance of $7,300 to my shipping agent for him to be able to off-set shipping charges down here and from there. The question now is,can I trust you with this balance?I am saying this because this balance also includes my commission. After payment has reached you and balance sent back to him,an agent will come and pick up the vehicle and drive to the shipper to be shipped to my customer, while title papers and other necessary documents will be sent by you courier to my customer. So you are to provide a contact address where this check will be sent via courier service and the names to be written on it.Also your phone number so that we can always call you.
N/B:Please confirm this and forward the following informations;
Names:.......
Address:.......
Phone number:........
For payment to be made and send to you as soon as possible.
Your honesty, understanding and co-operation will be highly
appreciated.
Have a wonderful day.
Best regards
Mr Frank.

Classic scam. You get the check for $53,000 and then deposit it and mail him a check for the $7,000 over that he paid you. By the time his 53,000 bounces its too late because you've already sent him the $7,000 and you're out the money and possibly the car.

That's a really old scam....thanks for sharing it though for those not in the know. If you have time on your hands and an agent that is not too busy you can follow the instructions on the link to possibly follow up with these losers.

Oh well, I e-mailed my friend Mr. Frank again and asked him where he is located and if he could give me a phone number. I am waiting to see if he gives me the info.
I don't think I have the energy to try and report this guy. just hate getting my hopes up about someone interested in the car.

Yes, an old scam and it is hard to believe these are still floating around. It may takes a while for your bank to catch it as a fraud, depending on the quality of the fake. Real bank checks are safe! But if someone is selling it, someone is faking it, no matter the item. You can get a "fake anything" these days.
You probably won't hear from him again.

Just tell him to "go-get-fked" and move on. They are everywhere, the scammers, just recognize it and don't let it bother you too much...but let him know he's trash first!
