Rainsensor Question for W208
Howdy all. Best wishes for the holidays. My first post on this excellent forum. Need some guidance from the gurus on here.
I have a 2001 CLK55 that on the advice of Chappy and others who posted good advice on tranny service, is at the dealers getting a transmission service at 50K. I asked the SA if I could get a rainsensor replaced and he indicated the only way was to get the entire windshield replaced. Intuitively that seems a little extreme, but I am not familiar with MB design practices so figured I would ask the more experienced folks on here.
Is he right? It seems to be something that is easily replacable and glued back on to the windshield.
Due to road debris I replaced my windshield a while back and used one of the national windshield repair guys that replaced my windshield with one that is apparently designed for replacement on a vehicle with a rainsensor. Needless to say my rainsensor has not worked since. I called them back out and they replaced the sensor. Though I do not know what sensor they used and how they could have got one if the SA is right.
I would like to know if it is possible for me to buy a sensor separately and replace it myself or whether I should just save myself a lot of hassle and live without it.

I've heard the rain sensor only work with OEM MB windshields and that's assuming your sensor is OEM. I don't know what happens when you start substituting though. Maybe your mechanic saw that your sensor was OEM and your windshield wasn't. I'd get those guys that replaced your windshield to put a real MB one on but you got it done a while ago so who knows. They probably saved themselves some money by going with a non-MB windshield though and possibly pocketed the difference for themselves.

Hey, how does the rain sensor work? Cause I got my car used but it has everything on it. and I notice that if the wiper is on if I speed up in the rain the wiper will work faster regardless of the setting its on.

Several owners have reported that their rainsensors don't work so well, either the're too sensitive or not enough. Maybe it's better yours doesn't work and you just dial in manual speeds?
Are other owners with rainsensors happy campers when it rains?

My rain sensor works perfectly on my 2001 CLK 55. My only gripe is that I can't leave it on always because whenever I turn on the ignition switch, the wiper wipes once. If that one wipe didn't happen, I'd just leave on the rain sensor all the time.
