Retrofitting CLK63 Airbox

Well.. after the brakes and quad exhaust upgrade, I have been bored for a while. While looking for a mod, since I sold my CF Renntech cover, I was in need of something that will add more power as I lost some of my top end power over 100mph.

So I decided to go for an 63 airbox upgrade. After this, I will port the throttle body and modify the heads and valves. Since I have headers and full exhausts done already, I think all I need to do is just optimize this setting after it's done.

By the way, I do think that some midifications on 63 parts are inevitable but I will show you the finished work as soon as possible.

63 air box will definitely flow better than our stock parts. I know that other parts need to be modified to make use of the extra air and that will be done after this upgrade.

All the parts that I think necessary for this conversion are on order as of today. It will take about a week to get those parts, so I will update you with any news in the meantime.

Use E55 Kompressor air boxes. They are pretty much a direct bolt on.

63s will not fit w/o some mods.

isnt the E55 boxes the same/very similar to the CLK55 boxes?

well, im taking a wild guess, for the 63 boxes, you'd probably need a new MAF adaptor. I needed one for my c32 amg airbox when I did them (but i upgraded to renntech cf box!)

also, while your at it, get spacers, pushes the boxes a little higher, and less engine heatup.

i cant wait to see it!

I will receive shipment through my forwarder on Tuesday next week.
I already placed PO and paid for the 63 parts. 55K Komp setup is an option.
But I would like to fit the new one and the modifications willl not be difficult at all. I will post pics when I get the parts and them fitted.

For all parts, about a 1000 USD total, including shipping to my door and 20% import tax. It should be cheaper or about the same in the US.

Arrived.

Luckly enough, all the parts arrived today and they will arrive at my door in an hour. so I will start working to fit the whole kit on my car from tonight if I don't have any exciting things to do tonigh. I have the original airbox to get the car going so I might consider doing a CF conversion to give it a nice look.

One thing I noticed is that the 63 airbox outlet to MAF is quite larger than that rubber Y pipe of of 55K airbox. So I will have to make it fit somehow now. I need to call up some people to get some hoses for this operation. I will take some time I think. And one of the acordian pipe was not the correct one. So I placed an exchange order for the correct part which will arrive sometime next week.

The rest won't be too much of a problem. Well let's see how and what I can do to make this work.

Another thing I noticed is that the european version of 63 does not seem to have the charcoal filter in the airbox. It did not come with my parts.

I will take some side by side picture for the airbox during installation and post it up.

What is supposed to be the advantage of using this box over the stck one?

It is a better designed intake system than our current boxy airbox.
It houses a larger and more efficient filter(think of fitting K&N on top of that).
It is better for cooling intake manifold since it get direct contact with air.
55 komp airbox will more likely an easy direct bolt-on(except Y pipe to MAF).
But inlet and the size of MAF of NA 55 motor is significantly larger than that of
55 kompressor. I tried to fit the Y pipe of 55 amg and it was way smaller.
Let me post some pictures of what I figured out last night.

if you type that in search you will see a post in CLS63 forum that removing the charcoal filter from the airbox will give them 18rwhp. But I ordered the European parts and I did not receive the charcoal filter they talk about. So there you go.

ah...that is interesting....

anyways. like I said before, you'd need an adaptor for your maf and the new Y section.

call kleemann, they have an adaptor. cost you around $150.

Thanks for the advice. Kleemann adapter won't work in this project either.
It is because the tubing from the airbox is significantly larger than 55K.
If they sell only the Y pipe, then I will buy it.

hmm... lemme see. ive done these intake mods alot, but ended up jumping back on a renntech cf box. but...heres some of my suggestions...

buy a 1/16" silicone tube, wide enough to sit in the current maf. heat it up and spray silicone bond onto it, then put it on your maf. if the Y section is big enough, then it should flush against your maf. then for safety, get another silicone to bond the Y section to the MAF.

otherwise like you said, just try out to see if the other Y section work.

cant wait to see this done! its lookin sexy as it is!
