I also deabdged my golf mkIV gti vr6 so people assumed i had 1.8t v4, little bit they knew it was sc2.8 v6

I dont have a problem with some one who is discreet about what they have or going for the looks. personally i think C L K 5 0 0 is too big on the trunk, and its not balanced with anything on the other side...

but adding AMG is plain simple W R O N G!!!!!!

MB Marketing knows there are people who want the AMG Sportiness but don't want or need to pay the markup for the AMG engine...
Just look at how many non-AMG cars they are selling with the AMG Sport package... Sure, there are people who will put AMG badges on just about anything and sure, I suppose they are trying to impress someone with their AMG badge and that makes them a poser I suppose... I also don't think it's always the case that owners are posers because you don't always know who put the badge on the car...
I think this is a very reasonable post. I understand there are big time posers. However, there is a mystique and history regarding the "AMG" brand. I dont think that the fact of putting the badge on if you have AMG Wheels, bodykit, accessories, whatever is THAT BAD at all.

Obviously if the car looks like trash, throw the badge on and it will look like more trash. In the above example the member had the badge from the factory, regardless if the dealer had it put on or whatever, sport pacakage, rims...it still has some AMG parts...is he a poser, I wouldnt think so..

If the driver drives like hes a poser, thinks hes a BADA$$ , on top of the badges then yes, he is a prime example. If the badge is on there, because some like it, and they have a few parts so be it....it all depends I guess..

Second point:
I have an NSX that has NSX-R Badging on it. It came like that from the previous owner, he was now where near a rice boy, and just had deep japanese roots ( born and raised there). No where on my car says "Acura"- at all. I have a few parts that are from an NSX-R, but by no means is my car the authentic thing, as a real one has never been imported...Am I poser too? I have rarely got a weird look that there is the badging , and an "H" logo on the taillight. Most people dont know what the hell I'm driving anyway.....and if they want to think I'm a poser I've been around the aftermarket car biz for a long time and got the juice to back it up

As I was reading this thread one of those special edition CLK 55's came in. It has the (AMG cluster, seat, steering wheel, brake)delete, and a custom installed 430 motor.

Lets get some things straight first. Its not a badge from the factory. Its a badge from the dealership.

And the answer to your question is YES, he is a poser. End of story. You can tell yourself all day long that he has the bodykit and rims..blah blah blah.....it doesn't matter. Its not a true AMG. People just have to deal with that.

Why is that so hard?

Well said, Stiggs!

It's real simple for those who have non-AMG cars with AMG badges:

1) One is a sucker for brand-watering and marketing

2) One is a poser

The real proof is everytime one steps on the gas pedal.

Actually, that's interesting. I saw a C230 the other day with - get this - S500 AMG badges. Same car?

I was driving on the S.I. Expressway today and saw a ML 350 (either an '07 or '08) with the AMG badge on the side the 4 matic badge would be on normally. I have never seen this before. So its safe to assume this person was a poser? I didn't think people actually did this.

My hope has been that it is more of a subtle murmur.

My poser stint was short-lived. My C320 was a C32, until I finished removing the letters.

Saw a CLK550 badged as a "CLK550 AMG" yesterday at Starbucks in Tustin. LOL. The CLK550 is a great car and doesn't need to be demeaned by an add-on badge!

Just saw a black S500 downstairs by my office. It said "S500" and "AMG" in the back and "V8Kompressor" on the sides. Looked legit, did MB produced 500's with a SC?? And the driver was waiting for his boss in the car, so I don't know if he's a poser or not....

A lot of time is devoted to the "fake badging" or posing debate. I understand the hating posers, but on one end, is it really that serious though? On the CLS forum, we had a discussion on it back a few months ago.

My situation was that when I bought my CLS, some moron had placed the CLS55 on the car which is a CLS500. I had the dealer to remove the 55, and put the 500 back on. +5 for myself.

The next part is the AMG badge issue. Being that my CLS has the AMG Sport Kit, the AMG stayed on. I don't think that is posing.

It was pretty much a agreed upon statement:

AMG Kit : Ok for AMG badge nothing else though. (No 55, 65, 63, etc.)
No AMG Kit/Not a full AMG : Nothing should be changed, that is posing.
V8 Kompressor Badge : If it is NOT a full AMG that is posing, period. A flogging is in order. LOL.

I think that is a fair assessment?

Sorta, but the problem is it does cheapen the brand somewhat. For example, a kid in say an Evo who knows not a lot beats your car and tells everyone he beat an AMG.

I can't recall who the member is, but in his sig. it says "no engine, no badge" - you can't put it much better than that. AMG models are special, and signficantly lower production numbers than "regular" MBs. They encompass BOTH styling AND performance upgrades.

Slapping an AMG badge on any MB and trying to justify it as "well, I have the AMG wheels and/or body kit, so it's okay" is a pretty weak excuse, IMHO. Lots of MBs have the AMG styling parts... few have all of the performance upgrades, which are the true AMG models.

I guess I would pose the questions BACK to those who, either through their dealer or own their own, opted to add or keep an AMG badge on a non-AMG model, "why did you do it? what do you get out of it?" Personally, if I had a few AMG styling parts on my C230, and therefore decided to slap an AMG badge on the back, I'd feel self-conscious about driving it, and getting called-out by anyone who knew better. Maybe that's just me...
