06 CLK55 AMG Cold Start, tapping, missing - HELP!!

We have an 06 CLK55 AMG, 24,000 miles, all stock. When we start it cold (not running for more than 12 hours) it starts fine but runs bad. Has been doing it for a while but seems to just get worse over time.

When driven it doesn't really misfire, but not firing up to par. There is a noticeable tapping sound as if a lifter is not pumped up and the valve is clapping. Once warmed up it runs perfectly, and the problem does not return till the next morning.

We took it to the dealer as it is under warranty (6 months left) and they said it is carbon build up and to put some Chevron fuel additive in it and will stop. That sounds like a bunch of crap to me. I have rebuilt engines and never heard of such a thing.

Is this a common problem with these AMG's? Any idea on WTF the mechanic is talking about? I am going to speak to him tomorrow about it but would like to be somewhat educated by the fine folks on the forum. Please educate me.

I also did a search already but couldn't find anything relevant.

There is a carbon buildup issue in the lifters not allowing them to pump up all the way when cold. This issue also arises when the oil level is low. Definitely check the oil level periodically. I've had serveral bad sensors and if the oil is low it will do this. Otherwise the only other way to clear the carbon buildup is to drive it hard like you stole it.

Thanks SPR. If the lifters are in the galley, how do they get carbon build up? I am not doubting what you are saying, but trying to wrap my head around the "how" so it makes sense to me.

Never tried on the benz, but the old school method was to mist the intake with water. Im not saying drown it!! The misting will contact the hot carbon causing it to crack and fall from the valve. This will clean the valve but the problem that built up the carbon will remain....

Carbon build up on the lifters??????? HA HA HA OMG , how does an over head cam engine have lifters?????? I rebuilt my motor and it has no lifters, tell the dealership to an adaptation, this resets all the sensors, and go from there. I always do this when i have a problem. I just recently lost my throttle pedal, one night it was driving it perfectly, then 3 hours later when i went to work , i push the throttle pedal and nothing happened!!!???!!!
took to benz and told them to reset everything , problem gone, car runs perfectly today!

The hydraulic lifters sit between the valve and the rocker, number 44 in the picture. Without them, valve adjustments would be part of the maintenance schedule.

i actually had the same exact complaint last winter. my car sounded like a cold Detroit 60 series. i thought the service adviser was out of his damn mind when they put the techron in, but it went away and never came back. ive been running a couple ounces of Lucas in my fuel every two or three tankfulls, and never had a repeat occurrence since then.
