2005 CLK55 AMG CABRIOLET
Oil question

Went to the store yesterday to get oil for an oil change (2005 CLK55 AMG Cabriolet) . They only had 7 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40, so I picked up 2 quarts of 0W-30 as the remainder.

Today I am reading online that the 0W-30 is not "Approved" for AMG engines even though it meets the same MB spec (229.5) and its' fine for use in other Mercedes cars for the same year (2005).

Has anyone used anything other than 0W-40 in their CLK55? I realize there is not a huge difference in these oil grades (The 30W is marginally "thinner" and we are getting to colder weather where thinner oils are supposed to be used). I am sure my engine will not blow up since it is still mostly 0W-40 in the crankcase.

I have mixed mobil 1 grades of oil several times.. I checked with mobil one and they said thier oils are compatable to mix.. Adding 2 qrts of 0-30 to 7 qrts of 0-40 would be hard to measurabale any change in viscocity.. IMO.

I have 6 qrts of 0-40 and 3 qrts of 5-30 in the oil pan right now..

It shouldn't be a problem at all. Our cars are able to take 0W-40 or 5W-40, and if you are running low a quart or two, using 0W-30 or 5W-30 shouldn't be bad. It's better to have an appropriate amount of oil in the engine than not.

Your good. The car will be fine. Much more of a warrantee "nit" than anything real. The mixed grades have no compatibility issues.

Just a reminder... IF you are still under a warranty (Mercedes Benz Warranty), and, God forbid, an engine failure occurs, they will pull an oil sample, and can check and verify if MB oil page 229.51 was used. If not, the claim will be denied and the motor repair is yours.

We allways use MB spec 229.51 in all cars still under MB Warranty, just in case, otherwise, like everyone else has chimed in, you'll be fine.

Happy Benzing!!
