CLK55 AMG common problems?
hi all, I am looking for a used 2001 CLK55 AMG (coupe) here in Hong Kong. Wanted to ask about any common problems with this model? What special areas should I pay attention to, when viewing a used model for sale (apart from crash repair)? There are two silver ones that I am going to look at later, after I get some advice from owners here. Many thanks in advance!

If properly maintained, they're rock solid. This is a list of items that should be checked. That doesn't mean all those things regularly break. Some of those things "can" break. Also, most of those items are inexpensive. In addition to the things on that page, the 55 has an oil cooler. A pair of oil cooler o-rings can harden and leak. That too is an easy fix.
You may want to consider paying a dealer to inspect the car.

Hi MArcus, my oil cooler appears to be leaking. Do you have the steps to replace the 2 oil cooler rings? Can those rings be purchased without buying the oil cooler?

If your from Hong Kong and thus a slightly wetter climate - just check for a bit of rust on the wheel arches - very common in the UK (but we do have a cr*p climate) I think its to do with the paint used - just worth a check and also boot locks have fairly common faults.
As said fairly bullet proof stuff - normal service items are sometime expensive - especially rotors!!!!!!

The o-rings for the cooler are available separately at your local dealer. The big seal is part number 1121840261, and has a list price of $25 ($18 at discount). The smaller seal is part number 1121840361 and has a list price of $24 ($18 at discount). The 1999 through 2005 C43, CLK55, and E55 all use the same parts.

I just had my crank sensor go out tonight. Lucky for me wait 10-15min with the hood open and it started. Good thing I was in town. The guys at the dealer changed it out for me in less than 1/2 hour (had to wait for it to cool down). Keep an extra in the glove box!
