S500 AMG -- Please Explain

Ok,

I've seen so many threads about this. My dad bought one in 2004 (A year 2002 car) from a luxury car dealership (was not Mercedes), this place just sold bentleys, bmws, rolls royces high end benz etc.

It has AMG rims, and the tag on the back. The guy said it is limited edition.. it looks like this but this:

One thing that confused me was, the s55 and s65 older models have a double exhaust pipe, and I believe inside the engine will say AMG on it..the one he has does not. He has a budget of about 100k for a new car and told me to look around for one.

If he is driving a bootleg mercedes I'd like to tell him. If this is bootleg please show me the proof so I can pass it along to him. I believe the chrysler 300 is a poor-mans Bentley and is the epitome of bootleg.....And I'm not about to be caught a hypocrite.

Its a poser AMG. The salesman is full of it. All AMGs have hand-built engines and two number designations (CLK55, C32, S55, etc). Someone just slapped an AMG badge on a regular S500.

2005 E55, 2002 CLK55, 2005 SLK350 also a 2009 BMW 335-IX
OK... Yes this car appears to have the AMG body kit and AMG wheels...

These were sometimes sold as an AMG package, sport package or something like that as a factory option. I do know that that the SLK350 could be ordered with that option in the past so I guess the S-class could have been had that way as well.

It does NOT have an AMG built engine and it would NOT come from the factory with an AMG badge on the trunk lid however.

As Chappy said once... See if you can use the VIN to get into the AMG Private Lounge and see what happens.

The car is year 2002, he purchased in 2004. He payed 78,000 for it. Was he ripped off? What should he have paid?

If your father bought the car seven years ago, and he's still happy with it, then chances are he wasn't "ripped off".

Price he paid is normal for S500s, but it is not an AMG vehicle. It's a regular Mercedes model, just with AMG rims and bodywork.
