Convertable top seemed to close less smoothly than my 430 so I had the local MB dealer service and replace the latch. No change...but it was probably never a malfunction in the first place.

Replacing 1 gas spring on the convertible partition. This is the part that keeps the partition down to meet the convertible top limit switch.

So far (1st 2 years of ownership) the car has needed virtually nothing. I couldn't be happier

Did you replace the gas shock that keeps partition in place yourself? If not not how much does this cost? Thanks

Mercedes Benz CLK 55 AMG
2004 CLK55

bought about 18 months ago with 174,000 kms on the clock
now has 210,000 kms

came with no history, but had an independent MB mechanic do a full go over, b service, trans service etc

replaced:
battery
maf
sway bar links & bushes
starter motor
convertible partition gas struts
boot gas struts
valve cover gaskets
thermostat

problems yet to be fixed:
engine mounts (not failed but are worn)
drivers side foot well air controller (jammed shut)
one of the SAM's might be problematic (getting Battery - Visit Workshop occasionally - havent read codes yet)
passengers window control module - rattle inside door every now and then
passenger side parking light intermittent - not the globe - something wrong in harness somewhere
turn signals dont cancel automatically (bought a new stalk - but a P.O. modified the hub that the stalk connects to and messed up the alignment - so the new stalk doesnt work. i can cancel the turn signals myself - the hub thingy was too expensive)

love this car...

PK - he isn't allowed in the merc - (he has his own car) but he snuck in while i was cleaning it - and looked so happy with himself - so i shut the door and took a quick snap. ive contemplated making a rubberised tub thing to go in the back that he can sit in - but knowing him - he will bite something that i haven't protected.

Odometer at 63,360.
Replaced the motor mounts (again) to resolve vibration. And five hours' labor on the oil filter stand and oil cooler seals to repair an oil leak.
Total tab ~$1,615. CarMax's MaxCare warranty paid ~$1,503 of that.

Mercedes 230 CLK Kompressor cabriolet
How many miles........

2000 CLK 230 Kompressor Cabriolet - 114,000 miles.

Hi There, I'm new to this, so unsure if I'm in the right place. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to Cardfan91 - If it weren't for you I'd be waiting for a reply for ever!

I have a couple of problems with my CLK:

1. The heater motor stopped working around the same time water bagan splashing from under the glove compartment to the passenger footwell. When I started unscrewing screws and removing panels, I removed the tray beneath the heater motor and water poured out of it. I've got a new motor and resistor, but before I fit it I want to get to the root of the water problem. I assume it's something to do with the rainwater run off. Any ideas?

2. When I'm putting the roof down it gets so far then sticks and needs a little push to continue.

3. Last couple of times I've filled the tank the fuel guage comes on when I think the tank should still be half full and I've only done 100 or so miles!

Any useful information about these little (but annoying) problems would be very gratefully recieved. (I'm no mechanic, but willing!)

Kind Regards

Sam

2004 CLK 55 AMG
Off to CLK55 Heaven

Community, I regret to announce the passing of my CLK55. It was mortally injured by a buffoon who drove out of a blind alley and into my wife's path. (The Wife is a superlative driver and utterly blameless.) The insurance declared the car totaled at 64,206 miles. So young...

2001 clk 55 amg
2001 CLK55 AMG. Purchased 3/17 approx. 155k miles. All said and done no real issues, got it with steering stabilizer shot and lower control arms starting to go. Within first 2 weeks coolant temp. sensor went, in first year had belt snap 2x from oil cooler lower gasket leak. First rainy day of the year aux. fans starting coming on randomly after multiple starts and had to remove #25 fuse to get them to go off. Still have this problem 😪😪😪. A/C stopped working which hopefully was the compressor clutch.

First project was replacing front lower control arms, center link, steering dampener, sway bar bushings and breather vent gaskets.

Now comes the fun part...going to list it so everyone can get a nice LOL from what I’ve done currently at 170xxxk miles...

blower motor resistor
cabin air filter
a/c cimpressor
a/c receiver drier
throttle body
maf sensor
secondary air pump
parking brake shoes(one side didn’t fit so only rocking one for now haha)
radiator, water pump, water pump pulley, thermostat, expansion tank, all coolant hoses. Basically entire cooling system.
Engine mounts
intake manifold
spark plugs
all coil pack and coil wires
crankshaft pulley, alternator, all other pulleys.
Fuel filter
left and right diverter valves, egr valve
all 8 fuel injectors (over $1k 🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️)
front and rear pads and rotors
brake fluid flush
LMAO goodridge phantom series brake lines
a/c condensor
looking to get a fan clutch today
CANT FIND engine ground wire from engine to frame
someone PLEASE HELP
have power flex bushings to press into original front lower control arms, genuine drag link and dampener to replace febi crap I originally got.

To do...along with that...
front upper control arms, full rear bushing replacement subframe, control arms etc.
full suspension, airbags?? D2 is really the only option...

new battery as well.

Want to to do everything else mechanically that hasn’t been mentioned as well as full interior removal and restoration.

Oh...and the body is **** lmao. So there’s that eventually.

Said and done currently with fluids and tools were somewhere around with purchase price roughly 15k just in parts...hehe

probably should have just gotten the kleeman supercharger kit for 10k... 🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️

sweet oil leak coming from hopefully not the front main seal, but possibly upper oil pan from replacing engine mounts. Leak at oil level sender, rear main seal and possible transmission gasket leak.

All said and done, coming from having 1 e36 M3 and 5 e46 M3’s 01-05 this is more than I could ever imagine.

Where red we are at, besides worn out rear suspension springs car feels literally brand new.

All parts purchased with lifetime warranty thru FCP Euro so... there’s that. Hope to fully restore and keep for years to come. Hopefully achieve 500k.

I feel a bit moronical, but it’s been fun and has only motivated me for my next e46 M3 build.

Pictures can be seen on Instagram @amgeeze. End of the day, cool to have the 01 equivalent of a e46 M3.

Probably will I’ll just do a muffler delete to the exhaust.

2001 CLK 55 AMG.......... 2001 Corvette Z06.........
I experienced a major mechanical issue literally the exact same day as the other post!

lemme see I have had my car about 6 years.

Bought it with 119k on the odo; 193k now. up until recently I have been really fortunate.

I am not going to count general maintenance items such as shocks, engine mounts, spark plus, wires, air filter, transmission filter, oil changes, tires and serpentine belt/pullies.

oil cooler gasket
rear main seal(only leaked 1 qt per 10k so no action taken)
front wheel bearings
MAF sensor
ABS pump
trans pan gasket
conductor plate plug
air lumbar system failure(just deleted it)
modified passenger side seat controller(basically forward/back went out so instead of replacing it I re-wired the function do the diagonal function)
windshield washer fluid tank
replaced battery twice(cause stock amp would not cut off)
stereo amp(just deleted it)
stereo cd changer(just deleted it)
stereo(just deleted it)
ecall module(just deleted it)

it seems like alot but most of the items were cheap and easy to replace......aka a new abs pump was $2500 but a used oem one....$150 to replace and repack bearings...the shop only charged me $60. Only annoying things were oil cooler gasket, the wheel bearings and the stock amp most of all. Luckily I am comfy with wiring and was able to trace the issue easily once I became aware of it.

it seems like alot but spread over 6 years it really isn't.

recently however I have a huge transmission leak. I traced it as far as I could...root cause either front trans seal or tq converter bushing. either require major service unfortunately

Radiator/water pump/coolant system

Seat control switches
LCD cluster
Driveshaft guibos
Power steering reservoir
Oil filter housing

But still love it!

So far we have a high mileage at 151,560 miles.

... and we have 80,000 as the low mileage.

I hope that everyone declares their mileage for statistical purposes.

It will be interesting to find High & Low mileage stats - since many R129s sat in garages for many years - not used daily as intended.

I sold my 05' CLK55 at 141,980 mi last month.
I put 100,000 of those miles on it. Only time it was ever towed was because of something I did. Overall a great car.

Just hit 178K Miles!!
If you see any of my previous posts you can see all that has been done to the car. Have been commuting 100 miles a day for the last month. Its been pretty great aside from the front end vibrations.
Typical cruising is 65-80 mph with several spurts up to 125-130. averaging 20.5 MPG!!! like what! Right valve cover gasket has gone, $16 bucks through FCP. Geniune Mercedes water pump installed 8k miles ago has gone, that has been the squealing/loss of coolant. PITA. Will be replacing that along with
water pump pulley, power steering pump and tensioner and belt. Wheels were re manufactured, with new continental DWS extreme contacts. Road force balanced about 5 times. Still get vibrations 43mph/60-78MPH and then seems to go away from there up. I still feel like the balance is off.

Will be replacing cheap febi steering dampener with genuine mercedes along with cheap control arms with the original with polyurethane bushings. Hopefully getting quaints Kw's suspension.

Plan on doing a dif fluid change and transmission fluid at 180.

Doing a few TLC things to the vehicle the spare tire secure piece i finally got after two years has taken away all vibrations SHOUT OUT AARON!!!

The car has been getting better and better since ownership for 2 years/20k miles.

Only thing has been the front end the whole time, if i can get it solid as a M3....then in my opinion the car will be much better than an e46.

The ride with the 17's on the continentals is butter. having the H&R sway bars i would assume is a great improvement over stock.

Will eventually be doing the rear main seal, not sure if i should just get a reman'd 722 or go to a s550 so i can do paddle shifters.

other than that there is a "knocking" coming from the hvac behind the glove box/passenger airbag. not sure what it could be.

2004 CLK55 Coupe, 235,000 miles
Most of common issues over the years other than normal maintenance...
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor
  • Voltage regulator, twice
  • Door handle. (switch for keyless went bad)
  • Rear brake light
  • Font away bar links
What's more interesting is what I have not had to replace yet... All original
  • Coolant hoses
  • Radiator
  • Power steering pump
  • Water pump
  • Idler pulley
  • Belt tensioner
  • A/C compressor
  • Ball joints/tie rods
  • Exhaust
  • Internal engine parts. Never had valve covers off
  • Transmission
  • Flex discs
  • Brake calipers
  • Starter
Hands down, the most reliable car I have ever owned.

Near 118k miles on my CLK 63. 2 days ago, the TPS sensor failed. Man, pretty scary as I would push gas all the way down and 5 seconds later my car goes flying straight forward almost hit someone. Not driving it anymore until I fix it.

Yeah, that CPS sesnor fails often. Had to replace it 3 times on my CLK 500 over the years. Or maybe the part is low quality. xD

I have just a smidgen over 85k miles on my 2002 CLK55. Has been nearly bulletproof for the past 2.5 years I've owned it. Maintenance is key. Issues: right visor cover broke off (have replacement visor as my next weekend project slot opens up), driver's side forward/rearward adjustment motor is giving up a ghost and the passenger is considering retirement. Pixels were gone when I bought the car but I don't feel like pulling the cluster and sending it out. Thats it in a nutshell.

I am looking at a Saleen Mustang but getting another car will require selling off the CLK55. I like the looks of the Saleen and the story behind the brand and I would like to experience something new....

Well, my CLK63 seems to be having one problem after another nearing 120,000 miles. Washer fluid won't spray anymore, left rear window regulator busted on its own, and TPS sensor failing and suspension is creaking heavily when turning, and SRS problem (guessing might be related with the window)

CLK 320
2004 CLK 320 152K miles. Just changed the conductor plate yesterday.

Problems:
Driver's headrest stuck in the fully extended position
Need motor and transmission mounts soon
Scratches on passenger rear wheel well, will require body work and paint to fix
Headliner needs replacing
Washer fluid reservoir leaking
No heat coming from vents on passenger side (temp wheel stuck)
No owners manual (I have one on PDF)
Buttons on AC control unit sticking together

Other than that it's a great car!

2002 CLK55 with 123K on it. Been my daily drive since July 2008. It's been such a solid car and it's starting to show its age on the exterior a little, I can't get rid of it.

At the moment -

Front wheel bearings
Front shocks
Valve cover gaskets
Sunroof won't close without holding the visor down - need new motor
I suspect other front suspension components like ball joints - need to evaluate
