Oil Consumption

I have an 04 CLK55 with a thirst for oil. It has about 64k miles. I've owned the car for about 7k miles. Several times already, I have had to add a quart of Mobil 1. I don't see any obvious leaks. Are these engines known to be thirsty? Is there something specific that I can look at/for? Any help is appreciated.

I believe they thirst for oil.

"7000 miles...several times...add a quart"

One quart every 3500 miles would not be bad.

Would could always do a leakdown and compression test to investiage valves and ring wear.

Have a really good look at the rocker covers for leaks as they are easy to miss. Also check all the crankcase breathers aren't blocked (3 hoses, 2 smaller ones can block). Always check the dipstick instead of relying on the warning, the warning can come on too early if there is some sludge in the pan. 1-2 Quarts per 7000mi isn't anything I would worry about.

Thanks for the input. I will take another look around the engine. And if nothing is amiss, I guess that it is something to live with.

I have not had that experience with my CLK (has 60k miles), though my last mechanic who worked on both my MB and VW said it's a chronic flaw/design feature (depending on how you see it) that German vehicles go through a bit of oil and need topping off somewhat regularly. Not necessarily a sign of something wrong/needs to be fixed, just a common trait.
