STUTTER AND OCCASIONAL ROUGH IDLE AFTER K&N's

Hello all I'm new to Mercedes. Moving from an S4 to the w208 CLK55 AMG. I recently put k&n's in and almost immediately ended up with an occasional rough idle and stutter from a stop. It runs great when moving and from a stop most of the time but on occasion when stopped it sounds almost like a car with a big cam. Any ideas?

Did you end up putting more oil on the filters? I know that there have been some cases with members using K&Ns and the excess oil can enter the maf and damage it that way..

Thank you for the reply. I did not ad anything because I was aware that to much oil can damage the MAF. I just would not think that it would happen that fast. At first I thought maybe the ECU had to re calibrate or something due to the air flow difference. That would have happened by now I would think if that was the case.

Please go back to the stock fleece filters and use a couple of bottles of Techron with the best 93 or 91 if you in Jerry brown hispeed railroad to nowhere from nowhere land. This may bring you back to a smooth idle. You should search on the forums.

Make sure your airbox is on tightly too. But as others said, sounds like a bad MAF.

Try AFE Pro-dry S, high flow and no oil to worry about.

I have put some K&Ns on mine, no problem yet but I'm wondering if I should get back to OEM Filters !?

What's your advice ?

I ran K&Ns on my 01 CLK55 for almost 10k miles with no prob and pretty much the rest of my cars as well. Not one problem.

I made the switch to afe pro-drys just so I wouldn't have to worry about reoiling them right.

I think when it comes time for the consumer to reoil is where the problem lies, if there is one.

if you have a standard air box I'd stick with the paper/standard ones. I have a c200k up till about a week ago it had a k&n to fit the standard air box i put the k&n in about 3 months before. Soon after that the engine management light came on it started to idle rough and have flat spots throughout the rev range and some times a strong petrol smell. Spent the next 3 months chasing the problem had a new cat fitted new mas new fuel filter new plugs still had the same underlying problem and the em light was still on i didn't have much more to try so started to replace the ignition coils done the 1st one no better then it hit me I'd fit the k&n them months earlier and my car was fine before I fit it so I thought I've nothing to lose I put the standard filter back in its been running sweet since that day and I ain't seen no em light since the day I took it off!

I had problems with a set of pre-oiled filters, killed my mas. I'm a paper man for my clk.
Some people have NO problem what-so-ever with K&N's on their MB products... Not me.

We use dawn dish soap and hot water on every filter we install no matter make or model to rid oils and grease. You'd be surprised the difference it can make. the oil is on the filter to attempt to stop dust particles even more...

If the MAF is gone, changing filters will not help. Disconnect the MAF and see if there is a change.

Hi all - sorry to thread jack but will the AFE Pro-dry S high flow filter for a CLK320 fit a CLK55 AMG? The afepower.com website has no option for the CLK55 AMG only the CLK320 is listed.

Is there a part number somewhere anyone might know.

Thanks.
