Brake upgrade done.

Hi everyone, after I did my 55 conversion I was in need of bigger brakes so I decided to upgrade to 6 piston amg calipers. A friend of mine designed and cut custom brackets to allow the brackets to be installed without having to relocate the sway bar mountings. And here are some pics.

Very nice Ash!

Wish I had a bracket made for mine, still the shortened sway bar has tightened up my handling!

Ohh neat. I didn't know the W208's used the spring + shock on the front instead of a strut. Looks good!

Hi Ash,

Did you use your 320 brake master cylinder or upgrade?

A few guys (myself) included found that although the brakes worked the pedal was a bit softer as the initial bite occured!

The 55 and 430CLK use the same master cylinder and so I thought about using maybe an E or S Class to get that initial bite back.

Hey Paul, i'm so glad you comented on this. when I did my 55 conversion I changed everything and I mean everything to 55. haha. I did notice too and kept bleeding it but no air in the system what so ever. the pedal is soft at the beginning but it bites and stops very good but I would like my pedal to be stiffer. I was told the first 20% pedal is for the rear brakes and then it kicks into front but didn't really make any sense to me. do you know if going to the E or S master cylinder would fix the problem? also would it fit or does it require any modifications because I have the strut bar so I cant have a bigger(longer) master cylinder.

Ash, the brake pedal activating the rear calipers 1st doesn't make sense to me also.

I do believe that the E or S Class master cylinder requires a slight modification. I'm researching it at the moment, I've asked a Merc Tech who has access to the parts bin catalogue to see if it's worth dropping the $$s.

I may also upgrade to an aftermarket cylinder because my discs are wearing and by next summer will need changing. As I have the Performance 2 piece discs I don't fancy going to the dealer so I'm looking at Evosports 390mm replacements!

Let me know what you end up doing, mine is good but I still want the pedal to be slightly firmer. I don't know how brembo gets away with their kits without changing master cylinder.

Ash... just puting this out there, but front/rear bias on the brakes is usually controlled via the proportioning valve. I havent had to mess with the CLK brakes, but have done a few others using wilwood products to sort things out. Check out what they offer and you may find some goodies to your liking. With all your swapin I cant keep track with your current set up! lol

Hey VIPclk320.

Your front brake upgrade looks very tidy. Would your friend be willing to consider making and selling the same brackets for the front caliper retrofit for others? Although I am across the pond in the UK, shipping and stuff is a breeze these days. Fully understand if this was a 'one off' favour. Let me know your thoughts.

Regards.
Greg

He has the design so I can have him make more, as for the pricing, it is $500 for CNC machine time and $230 for material which requires the two blocks of 10"x 5" x 4" 6061 T6 aluminum. Shipping wouldn't be expensive because they are super light. These brackets are made for the 6 piston caliper to work with the 345mm rotors off of the C55. I did that because they are bigger than te 340mm that they come with on SLKs and CLKs and cheaper than the two peice 360mm ones that come with the CLK black series. You can get the C55 rotors in one or two piece and companies like brembo and Stoptech make them but the 360mm are dealer only. You can choose to run the 360mm rotors you just have to use two 7.5mm centric spacer washers between the caliper and the bracket.

Hey VIPclk320, where did you get the rotors from to begin with? I am thinking about taking some brakes off of a porsche a friend of mine is parting out but I am not completely sure I want to undergo the problems from converting one to fit onto the w208 55AMG. Is it as simple as having a bracket made? I am guessing I would you the measurement from the clk Mounting and fab a bracket that is identical to the Porsche bracket. The Porsche Brakes are Brembo btw. So if I am getting all 4 brakes and pads for 750 and the cost of your bracket which I est, according to you would be about 750-800 This is still much cheaper than the Brembo kit which we all know is 3k+. And of course I would upgrade the rotors.
Please let me know your thoughts??
Again it would be great to know where your brakes came from bc I have a CLK55 and the stock brakes don't look anything special.
Thanks

the brackets that I have will only work for these calipers not any other ones. making brackets that allow the calipers to be centered with rotors and have no over hang or under hang is very difficault and pricy. my friend had my spindle removed and scanned by a CMM machine and then designed the brackets on the virtual rendering of the spindle and then cut them with cnc machine. the calipers are black series 6 pistons. the rotors as mentioned in my post are C55 amg rotors 345mm. its not a simple project by any means and if you want it done right deffinatly not cheap. let me know I you have ay further questions.

Thank you very much. He is a brake system expert as he does a lot of design work for brembo.

Also what made you choose the more expensive metal? Why not go with a good steel or billet? More of a curiosity on that.
