Question buying used CLK55, what issues?

I am considering buying a used CLK55, what should one look for, as problems?

Also how are the 2001 or 2002 models, do they have specific model year issues?

Does the traction control get in the way of driving, (large delays, as suggested in Edmunds)?

Is the steering reasonably responsive.

Current vehicle is 2001 chiped S4.

Thanks,
Don

Don,

Welcome to MBWorld

Overall, there are few issues with the W208 CLK-line....some small control/module glitches (window regulators, etc.) that most will have cured under warranty. With the hand-built AMG motor, there are no real issues with the normally aspirated unit.

Some here have experienced problems with the MAF sensor, usually after installing aftermarket air filters....an expensive lesson. Modding these cars is expensive if done properly.

There are really only a couple of cosmetic changes from 2001 to 2002 CLK55s (internal trunk release, center wheel caps, ski sack).

As far as responsive steering, "your mileage will vary"......drive the car and judge for yourself. I personally find it exceptional.

Traction control can be turned off via a console mounted switch. And yes, with it on it is instrusive (only because there is SO MUCH power).

Good luck with your search!

Smile Thanks

Thanks for the info. I wonder if anyone has programmed the drivetrain CPU for less intrusive traction control?

The MAF can have problems from too much oil in a K/N filter, this has happened on a lot of cars. Also the airlow through the MAF senser needs to be laminar.

Don,

You are probably already aware, but you can turn the traction control off when and if you like. Additionally, some tuners, like Renntech maybe, can probably do all kinds of computer tuning above and beyond what they advertise.

I personally don't mind the traction control at all. The car hooks up and launches great. In fact, you can still spin the tires even with it on. I love it and have had several cars where I could smoke the tires through 4th gear. Basically, with 525rwhp, i had no traction. I find my 2001 55 to be absolutely amazing. However, I am moveing on and just recently put my car up for sale. If you are interested, it is posted in the cassifieds forum.

Let me know if you have any questions, either about my car, or the cars in general.

Regards,

David
