cold cranking amps is the latter. This can be thought of as the power output used to start a cold engine. The number of cold cranking amps you need depends on your vehicle and where you live, specifically how cold it is where you live. The two factors are that the colder an engine is, the more power it takes to turn the engine over to get it started. It has all that cold, sluggish oil to contend with. The other factor is that the chemical reaction in the car battery that creates electrical energy is less efficient in the cold.

So the colder it gets, more power is needed, but the available power drops.

So if you live where it’s cold, you need a car battery with more cold cranking amps than you do where its moderate or hot. You should always get at least as many cold cranking amps as the manufacturer recommends, but may want to upgrade if you live where it gets real cold.

The first part of that - 100 ah - means the battery is rated at a capacity of 100 amp hours. That means that if the battery was discharging 100 amps it would theoretically last for 1 hour. If discharging 50 amps, it would last for 2 hours; 25 amp discharge would last for 4 hours, and so on.

First, you have a great battery. Varta batteries are Mercedes OE, have Silver-Calcium impregnated lead plates, and will last longer than standard lead plate batteries. They have a long list of advantages, which is why some Mercedes owners swear their batteries never wear out. They do wear out, but they take forever on a car that sees regular use. As previously said, the first number is the reserve capacity. Reserve capacity is the number of minutes a fully charged battery at 80 degrees F can be discharged at 25 amps until the voltage falls below 10.5 volts. Varta batteries commonly have the word "Kaltstarstrom" before your second number. In English, Kaltstarstrom is translated as "cold start current", or as we say, cold cranking amps. Where I live, reserve capacity is more important than cold cranking amps. Depending on the weather where you live, the exact opposite could be true. That is key what is highlighted in red. If you store your car during winters and don't drive it when there is an overcast let alone rain. You will eat batteries if you don't use a trickle charger. I went through 3 OEM batteries in 4 years. 1st one, 2nd one, and replaced my 2nd one a few weeks before selling.

My Varta battery finally died and my mechanic replaced it with the one below. The car now starts without hesitation and the headlight washers now work (they did not with the old battery). The new battery has even more abbreviations and signs. Has this new Interstate battery any peculiar features? The little sticker in blinding white says "Made in Germany".

Kudos to Marcus,

Stay away from any battery that requires maintenance or water checks.

Spend the extra buck for sealed batteries and you will not regret it.
