2005 clk center console wont open sideways, it's broken, help!
My center console only opens up and down to reveal the big compartment, but does not open sideways. Neither way works. I can push both side buttons in but nothing happens. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a secret button that magically opens it? please help!
Thank you!
Thank you!

ROLLNNNN - have the same issue from time to time. Sometimes it gets stuck in the open position and won't close. Once you get it open you"ll notice a couple of catch-pins that engage the tray cover. I'm guessing there's some flex in the system and they get jammed.
I broke them on my last CLK. Bought a new cover and never had the problem again - so your ultimate fix may be to break it and get a newer armrest cover. I think the stealership only sells the entire center console insert, which can be expensive, but you can get the cover online.
Wish I could give you better advice beyond continue to play with it - you'll eventually work it out - or bust it...

Don't understand what you mean but I know the top lid can open or adjust. I adjusted mine the day I saw the car and I screwed it afterward. After I bought the car, I battled and figured it out. My wife assisted me in putting it correctly on again. Those two buttons on either side help by pulling in them long pins on the inside when simultaneously held. Its a irritating thing to work with but patience always works great. You will see the clips as well may need to be folded in the hold them in place and then press that two buttons with as much pressure as possible. Then you needta try and slot them on the lid itself
NB maybe the above aint your problem but hope it helps

The CLK is generally a very well designed car. Some of the exceptions are definitely the glove box lock mechanism and this stupid centre console. I can see what they were trying to do but I wish there was just a normal compartment with a lid that opens up from the back. I looked into converting it to work this way but gave up as the modification would look pretty ghetto with the limited tools and techniques of the home garage. I wonder how many people actually want a car phone.
As pointed out the two buttons slide the pins in from either side allowing it to open but at this age they are often malfunctioning. You can only push button to open one side at a time.

I've pushed both these button pretty hard trying to open it. Both one at a time and at the same time. I seems like its just not engaging the pins and something is broken inside. I'm just not sure what to do anymore. Like ffxf1 said, i might just have to push them in harder and try to break this lid and install a new one.
Any other tips, before doing this?
Thank for the help guys!
