2001 CLK55 weird groaning noise from the rear

I'm getting this weird groaning noise coming from the rear. It sounds like something is trying to close and can't, so it keeps trying. Looked at everything in the back half of the car and can't find anything off. It goes away if I gas it hard, about 3/4 throttle. So lately I've been running it a little more briskly when I first get in to get rid of the noise. But today on my way to work, I did not have a chance to gas it, so the noise kept going all the way to work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Rob,

A lot of things groan, Stomach, wallet, wife, and Trump. Oh Well

Groan, moan sounds can come from Differential, Wheel bearings, Driveshaft carrier bearing.
It is hard to narrow down without a thorough inspection. Normal cars can coast at speed in neutral but Benz has a rear oil pump that will grenade and ruin the trans.

Removing the trans and drive line while in neutral helps diagnostics but do not do it to Benz while at speed.

When backing off the gas moaning sounds will come from the diff when pinion gear is not meshed with the ring gear properly. One of the bearings might be bad.

When you gas hard the drive shaft carrier bearing loads hard into the chassis and stays. At normal cruise it remains unloaded in bearing rubber. (remove cover and inspect Rubber)

I need a bit more info but this might get you closer. Also check Diff Fluid Level.

Cheers, Gator

Thanks for the great info! Just got the car the beginning of November. Only major service I have not completed is the diff service.

How much should I expect to pay for a diff service/fluid replacement?

My local MB mechanic is trying to say that it could be the central locking pump. How would me accelerating hard have any effect on the central locking pump? What is a symptom of a central locking pump going out? All my locks work fine with no issues or hesitations.

I am DIY person so paying for service and diagnostics has never been in my budget.

To test the mechanics theory unplug the pump and drive it.

I will never turn down an opinion if it does not cost me anything.

Cheers
