2001 CLK55 weird groaning noise from the rear
Does anybody have any suggestions?

A lot of things groan, Stomach, wallet, wife, and Trump. Oh Well
Groan, moan sounds can come from Differential, Wheel bearings, Driveshaft carrier bearing.
It is hard to narrow down without a thorough inspection. Normal cars can coast at speed in neutral but Benz has a rear oil pump that will grenade and ruin the trans.
Removing the trans and drive line while in neutral helps diagnostics but do not do it to Benz while at speed.
When backing off the gas moaning sounds will come from the diff when pinion gear is not meshed with the ring gear properly. One of the bearings might be bad.
When you gas hard the drive shaft carrier bearing loads hard into the chassis and stays. At normal cruise it remains unloaded in bearing rubber. (remove cover and inspect Rubber)
I need a bit more info but this might get you closer. Also check Diff Fluid Level.
Cheers, Gator

To test the mechanics theory unplug the pump and drive it.
I will never turn down an opinion if it does not cost me anything.
Cheers
