trans range sensor issue

man, 5 years of oil changes and all at once this car just fell apart it seems.

2001 clk 55 amg

symptom: no gear designation displayed, trans stuck in 1st gear. CEL transmission range sensor is code recorded.

basically just need some confirmation. mercedes sometimes does things so backwards. most cars I have messed with mount this sensor on the transmission but according to what I have read the sensor is inside the shifter?

I am fairly certain this is correct but need some assurance before proceeding. One person says I need a conductor plate but that diagnosis I do not believe to be accurate. Prob just trying to separate me from my earnings.

Lastly, replacing this sensor.....is it just a plug and play? Or is there some sort of configuration necessary?

nevermind. seems it's plug n play.

Most transmission problems are due to conductor plate, TCU plug, someone spilt a drink on the shifter or really bad transmission fluid. Have you hooked it up to STAR?

I replaced the conductor plate on mine. Not a hard job but messy. It wasn't my problem though so I ended up going to the dealer and needing the whole transmission rebuilt.

I swapped in a used shifter about 10 minutes ago. everything has been restored to normal operation. yay!

my pan gasket had a small leak in it about 6 months ago. I had that plug/connector replaced at the same time as a preventative measure. It only costed me like 13 bucks and the mechanic said he would install it for free so win/win.

I didn't spill anything on the shifter but I am pretty sure the previous owner did. The shifter assembly was taken apart previously. I did try the cleaner/q-tip method before replacing the shifter.

Good you got it sorted. The location of the W209 cup holder makes me think Mercedes was laughing when they installed it. Don't know if it is the same for the W208.

on the 208; it seemed like a cup holder was an afterthought. The cup holder itself is all but useless.

when it stopped working, i just removed the entire assembly and put a standard cup holder inside of it. works so much better.

To be honest I am surprised no one came up with and marketed a recessed cup holder for it.
