Harmonic Balancer Issue
MB must have had an issue with the harmonic balancer on the 171 motor in our '55s. There are at least 4 part number supersedes.
I discovered this while watching mine on my '06 while someone lightly rev'ed up the motor between idle and 2500 rpm and back down again. It's moving in and out on the rubber damper with only 55k on the odo.
Anyone aware of an aftermarket harmonic dampener?

I caught this problem on my 04 CLK55 just in time the balancer started to seperate and hit the oilpan, I bought a new one from parts.com was about 350.00

I found this problem on my NA M113 Harmonic Balancer. The Mark had slipped. It read near zero degrees alignment with the keyway.
I am retrofitting to M113K balancer which has the extra pulley. The keyway should be aligned with -40.
Blackbenzz helped me with this one as WIS is illustrated in CAD. Can be misleading to some.
I believe there was a recall for W209 M113.

There was a recall but I think it was '98 - '00 MY. Seems like they didn't get the issue fully sorted out as Ive read that it continued without MB support. That is other than continued part updates.
