W209 convertible top not going all the way down

My W209 (CLK55 AMG) top has stopped retracting fully. See the photos. It goes almost all the way into the trunk and stops. Just before the lid would start to close it stops and gives the error code to please close the trunk partition. I put the top back up. Then I put the rear headrests up and retracted them when starting the roof cycle. Nothing seems to help. And yes, I repeatedly put the partition up and down. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

Try putting the top up, unplugging the battery, and then trying again? It seems very strange that it would stop at that point, doesn't really indicate a hydraulic problem.

Trunk partition struts

It could simply be tired gas struts in the trunk partition. P/N 2096900059, not expensive if you buy aftermarket parts.
If the soft top touches the trunk partition just a little bit after the top has retracted, that might be enough to trigger the micro switch for the partition in case the gas struts don't have much charge left in them.
