About to buy 40k Mile 04 CLK55 Cabrio
Hi All,
sorry if this is a question that’s asked a lot. I’m about to buy my first AMG. I’ve come across a good condition CLK55 with only 40k miles. The asking price is $17k.
I’m aware of the usual high maintenance but just wanted to hear general thoughts on that price point. I just completed a PPI from a reputable MB mechanic in my area and it came back clean. Fluids were recently topped off and a brake job was recently completed as well.
I live in Chicago, apparently this car was mildly winter driven with no issues. We didn’t see any rust damage at all.
additionally, anyone have a good rec for a CarPlay head unit? This spec doesn’t have the NAV option.

That price seems reasonable to me. Judging value on these vehicles is difficult because there are so few of them - not enough sales volume for KBB to be accurate. Classic.com shows a current average of $13,500, but again, lack of volume makes it hard to judge. Some go on Bring A Trailer for over $25,000 grand, some go on Cars.com for $12,000.
The only real common problem with the W208/9 AMGs is with the hydraulics for the convertible top. The o-ring design is pretty much crap, and if one fails and you only replace that one, the increased pressure throughout the system will generally cause the rest to fail. I spent about $4,000 two years ago for parts (from Tops Hydraulics) and labor to replace all five.
I'm looking at this headunit - wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, good reviews, reasonable price.
