ESP/BAS Complaints about abrupt cut in power, and delay to return
These cars have a bad reputation for cutting the power abruptly, and having a long delay before returning the power. This rep started back when the cars were tested, by magazines, when they were new. Traction control was a fairly new thing, and the drivers would go out and hot rod the cars forgetting to turn the ESP off beforehand. These systems would learn driver habits and doing that would teach the system that the driver didn't understand throttle control and respond appropriately. This sort of thing would happen with regular cars too, as people wouldn't turn it off before driving hard. Newer systems rely more on predetermined settings, and adjust on the fly, to avoid this issue.
The way to correct this issue is to reset your ESP/BAS, and Driver Adaptations, and not go out and floor it while the ESP is on every time you want to drive like that. It may take several times(not all at one time, these memories are accrued over three full warm up/cool down cycles) if the memory for these systems hasn't been erased much over the years.
The memory can be stubborn to delete for both ESP, ECU, and trans, Adaptations. You can reset all three by doing a button dance for each individual system. You may be able to skip cutting power to reset the ESP by simply doing the steering wheel rotation part as described in the procedure. There's lots of places to find these procedures online.
I assure you this works. I'm able to have quite a bit of wheel spin with imperceptible intervention, even though the light is flashing. But, most of the time the light doesn't even flash with a little wheel spin. Which means I don't have those scary moments in the middle of an intersection waiting for the power to resume. Mind you, the car does have to be in good running condition...
Enjoy!
